We thoughly enjoyed our latest stay, which is the 14th. The hotel has a homely and friendly atmosphere, the staff are always attentive and curtious making one feel at ease. The menu caters for all tastes and is cooked to perfection. The room we stay is en-suite with a spa bath, luxury after a long day in the mountains, running a marathon or sight seeing. The bed is a half tester very comfortable and warm. The hotel is in the Snowdonia region being central to all the North Wales attractions, the mountains, narrow gauge steam railways, slate mines, copper mines and all the beautiful villages in Snowdonia

Charming cosy Inn, low beamed ceilings, log fires ect. Lovely rooms although not huge beds and a tad dusty in parts! On a very busy road so not as quiet as you might expect. Food.. not great and not cheap! They have a big menu plus a whole page specials.. always a bit of a worry.. All in all, was a nice place to stay for a couple of nights...

This was my second visit to the Ty Gwyn hotel after having visited it in August 2009, both for walking holidays and sightseeing on my own - my experiences were pretty much the same each time. It's set just on the edge of the village (walkable distance) of Betwys-y-Coed, which has a mainline station, a visitors' centre, post office, small supermarket and lots of shops selling souvenirs and hiking equipment.

The building is an old stone coaching inn, with rooms of varying sizes - clean, well-maintained, comfortable, with satellite TV, kettle etc. The rooms I stayed in had no en suite (though some do) but there are two shared bathrooms in good condition. The whole building has a lot of character, with antique furnishings, paintings, memorabilia and stone walls.

Rooms are upstairs with the ground floor having a lounge, a bar/restaurant area and a full dining area. The restaurant is excellent - if you are staying in the hotel, you can automatically book dinner there, and I'd highly advise everyone to do so, as it quickly gets full. I saw several parties who had come on spec turned away every night because there simply weren't enough tables left. Food was of superb quality, better than I've had in many restaurants costing twice as much or more, with a varying menu of lots of interesting dishes using local and seasonal ingredients - and the portions are also large, which is good if you have been out walking all day. There is a decent wine list and the bar is open for drinks and bar meals as well. Breakfasts is included if you are staying, nothing unusual (toast, juice, cereal, fry-ups) but again cooked well with good ingredients.

There aren't many amenities apart from the lounge, bar and and a back terrace for those staying there, but I always felt comfortable coming back during the day at odd times to shower and change after walks. Staff and owner were all very friendly and efficient - also fluent in English and Welsh, if that is an issue. Other guests were pleasant too, and there was a nice comfortable atmosphere during breakfast and evenings where you felt free to chat but not at all pressured to do so.

Most people I met were there for walking and/or sightseeing. The area is particularly good for walking; you can just go out of the door for several walks of varying challenge from Betwys-y-Coed, there is a fair local bus service during the day to other locations, and a car opens up a lot more opportunities.

I think the worst thing that I could say was that, due to the antique construction of the place, I bumped my head on low beams a couple of times.

We spent a week at the Ty Gwyn. It was simply outstanding. This was our first trip to Wales and our stay at the Ty Gwyn was perfect. It set the tone for our stay. The food was so good that we ate every evening meal there, not bothering to try anywhere else. The menu was exceptional. My wife has food allergies and she was accomodated each and every time with a wonderful meal. We could not have been happier!

We dined with you last Wednesday and it was superb. The dining room is comfortable, the menu had a good range – as did the wine list.
The lamb was the best I have ever tasted and we were served throughout by Lisa who was attentive and polite without hovering at our table.
All in all it was a very pleasurable experience and one which my wife and I would want to repeat when we next come to Wales.

Ty Gwyn (White House) is located in a deep valley next to a raging river with water falls a mile upstream. It has an ancient structure with low, beamed ceilings, tiny corridoors and squeeky floors. The charm of the place far outweighs the irritation of every step you take being accompanied by noises from the floor below.

The staff are totally focussed on providing service and nothing is too much trouble for them. A great welcome with check-in taking about 30 seconds and then shown to the room.

The restaurant must be booked in advance as this is clearly the most popular place in town. The menu was full of high quality local specialities and portions were HUGE. The shoulder of lamb is legendary and appears to be almost half of the animal when it arrives on your table. Back home this would feed a family of six!

Only negative comment is parking is limited so I had to leave car on the road which turned out to be fine but was worrying at the time.

After a hard day of walking in Snowdonia the Ty Gwyn was exactly what we wanted to come back to. It has great charm, is very clean and and has no sign of "tiredness" like many old hotels. The staff were friendly, food excellent and the restaurant/bar a very snug and pleasant place. Being a coaching inn it's obviously on the main road so traffic is something to consider, however during the night there is very little traffic and overall the Ty Gwyn can be thoroughly recommende3d.
