I can see why people say this place is full of character but I'm not sure it's to my taste. Rooms are smallish, fairly dark and lacking the facilities of more modern places. Light bulbs didn't work and hot water seemed in short supply. As a poor sleeper I had asked for a rear facing room but even so you could still hear the road noise quite clearly. It was also the hot spell so rooms were desperately warm.
On the positive side the food is very good - great choice, (too) big portions and tasted really nice. The fish and prawn gratin starter was outstanding and the beef stack would have been a challenge for 2 people to finish but flavours were memorable. The breakfast sausages were also worth going back for. Service was also very pleasant - the staff did everything they could to make me feel at home.
In hindsight I would probably go somewhere a bit more standard and eat here but I can understand why others love the character of the place.
