“indifferent and rude staff”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

The staff were so task orientated they seem to have lost sight that if it was not for customers they would not be in business.
The owner (?) a male was rushing around and had no visible people skills - very brusque, to the point of being rude. The whole staff team seemed to have been trained not to give customers any eye contact at all .
The food was good but not good enough to return again to be subjected to staff who made you feel that you were an inconvenience.
The place was very busy and we felt that because the place is so popular the owners/staff feel that they do not need to try...........problably don't rely on repeat busuness.

We have just returned from a very pleasant 7 nights in Ty Gwyn. We enjoyed the quirkiness of the hotel and found the staff very helpful and friendly. Our room(9b) was most comfortable and the large spa bath was a real treat after long days walking and climbing.

The meals were of a very high quality, good variety to choose from, well cooked and plenty of it. We never managed 3 courses!

Have passed this hotel several times and considered staying there, finally got round to it a recently as a chance to relax and spoil ourselves for the evening.
The rooms were very comfortable, cosy and invited relaxation. The service and food in the restaurant and bar areas were all excellent, well priced and good value. The owner was very pleasant and helpful and everything about our stay was both relaxing and enjoyable.
We left very happy and will return. Thank you!

Room Tip: There is no better value than Room 9B with its spa bath, balcony, 4 poster bed and endless chairs an...

Enjoyed this hotel - it was good value for money at £98 for our room including breakfast which was fine.
The restaurant is excellent with lots of old world atmosphere and good food, but you need to book in advance as it is very busy. As a result, there is not a bar area for residents if you are not eating. If you are eating or get a table in the bar later on, it finishes up at 11 and you have to retire to your room.
The rooms we had (my parents also stayed) were very clean and pleasant with lots of character. There are serious issues however with low doorways and ceilings and light fittings for anyone tall , and the floors are uneven with the odd step here and there that can catch you out if you have any balance or mobility problens. This is of course to be expected in such an old building, but worth bearing in mind as my dad hit his head on the light fitting in his room a number of times.
The shower was very low pressured in our room, but again in an old building not a major issue. The bedlinen and towels and toiletries were all perfect and the bed was very comfortable. If you are a light sleeper, noise travels a lot between the rooms, but this did not bother us.
Thanks for a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Our room 9A seemer to have less noise travelling into it than my parents which was at the other end...

Once more we stayed here for our annual Snowdon expedition, and had a great stay. The rooms are excellent value for money which will leave you with plenty to spend in the superb restaurant. This is the highlight of the stay with candlelit cosy dining areas with antique furniture adding to a great atmosphere. This is no designer pub made to look quaint, it's the real deal! We found all the staff friendly and helpfull, we look forward to future visits.

Room Tip: Downstairs twin room is a bit cramped with no view, we found the upstairs rooms a bit brighter with...

There's a fine line between gloomy and quaint. I think this inn falls towards the former.

On the plus side, the staff were wonderfully friendly, it's situated close to the town of Betws, and the evening food was very, very good indeed.

The negatives: It's dark - very dark - and needs a good lick of paint, Our bedroom, 9b, needed some work, not least of which was a lightbulb that worked in the bathroom, lick of white paint EVERYWHERE and the empty planters on the balcony filled with flowers and not cigarette butts. It's just the attention to detail that's missing - and some extra lighting!

We won't return as it didn't quite meet our expectations at £130 a night which I think is not an insignificant price. Other rooms may be better priced. But we wanted a balcony (see above) and spa bath (nice, but again lack of lighting... I mean, how can someone see to clean it!?!!?)

Perfect if you like an 80s idea of a 16th century coaching inn. Great grub though - it may want to reconsider rebranding as restaurant with rooms.
