“Loveliest place in Wales”
Reviewed October 16, 2008

We travelled through Wales.

Wanted to stay at lovely places, and the loveliest we found was the Park Hill. Friendly, comfortable.

We found Jaap's and Ghislaine's place the best we encountered in Britain. Very helpful staff, beautiful place to stay.

We slept excellently, had great breakfast and unwinded completely, the pool was very helpful for that!

And a nice village within hand reach on top of that.

We'll be back!

Looked for a centrally located place. Betws-y-Coed is such a place. And the Park Hill is the special gem there. Gislane and Japp run a very nice guest house. In style, old building, some retro rooms, we love it and we’ll be back.
Try sunset in the conservatory with a nice Whiskey (ask Japp for advice!). Walk to the village for a decent meal. Walk back in the darkness and look at the stars (those torches with your room keys are a bright idea: you really need them). And then a nice glass of wine in the bar.
A relaxing swim, and then sleeping in a quite place. Very, very relaxing indeed.

Very nice people, very nice place..

Nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed the pool and the sauna (needed and very relaxing after a day mountain biking if you are not really used to it).

We love the cheerful atmosphere: it was very busy but there was a lot of laughter in the kitchen. And real coffee too!.

Thank you very much for a lovely weekend.

We wanted a short break – just a couple of days relaxing (hill walking that is!) We looked at the site of the Park Hill. It looked great! So we booked and off we went.

We arrived after dark.
In a front room we could see lights, but nothing else. So we headed for the swimming pool, where we stayed till after midnight. The following morning: what a great view, fantastic.

After lovely breakfast (vegetarian: ask for sausages and they have baked beans too , not mentioned on the menu) up to the Snowdon. Return: straight into the sauna. Not large, but really hot. So: pool-sauna-pool-sauna-pool.

And then a meal. We headed for the Gwydyr in the village. Doesn’t look spectacular from the outside. Is great, nice ales too.

The Sunday we repeated this, as we did the Monday. Lovely place, lovely people, lovely room (1).

Great location - so central for everything, clean and comfortable rooms, nice breakfasts and friendly, welcoming hosts.

All in all an excellent experience. Returning to North Wales: not anywhere else than at Jaap’s and Ghislane’s place. They make everything so easy: walks, recommendations where to go and to eat. Nice place, lovely people. Can't wait to return.

We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in August planning to use it as a base for hiking up Snowdon and some mountain biking in the nearby forest.
The hotel, as has been mentioned in earlier reviews does need updating. I appreciate that it's an old house and that not everything needs to be clinical and straight (our own house is older than this one and in better condition) but some work in the bedrooms wouldn't go amiss.
Our room had the following problems;

Cosmetic
1) A bed so soft it was almost impossible to get a good nights sleep, i don't know whether this was the style of the bed or whether the mattress was so far gone.
2) Base of wardrobe broken and hanging off
3) Dated wallpaper and furnishings

Cleanliness
1) Significant amounts of mould in the bathroom
2) Floor wasn't vaccumed once during the 4 night stay
3) Don't bother looking behind the radiator!! Ugh!

We didn't use the pool or sauna so can't comment on these.
Jaap and Ghislane were very friendly and not at all creepy, although staying at this hotel was like staying at your parents again with the hostess drilling you with questions about your day as soon as you entered the hotel!

Breakfast was fine, although if you don't ask for extras you'll get 1 sausage & 1 bit of bacon as standard, not enough to start a trek up Snowdon, thats for sure!

We didn't stay for dinner as there is a much better selection of eating establishments down in Betws-y-coed, the Old Oak hotel pub serves really nice (affordable) food and a good selection of ales, you can tell it's one of the most popular places in the area judging by the number of people constantly sat outside.

Our main concern was that our room was left open by a cleaner during one of our day trips, we wouldn't have been too bothered about this fact if we were travelling light (and the fact that it's a small guesthouse), however I had 3k's worth of Photo equipment in the room plus a laptop.

All in all, we had an "OK" stay, I certainly wouldn't recommend this hotel to the younger generation however the older generation may appreciate the cosy, homely feel complete with all the quirks. If it was £50 per room per night, instead of pp then it would be a better deal and we would "possibly" stay again.

All we wanted was a quiet place to relax. No kids (hurrah for grand parents!), just sit, walk a bit, enjoy views and a swim or something like that.

We had the smallest room (so they said) but it still was larger than most "small rooms" we stayed in at other places. Cosy, with an en-suite shower.

It was near to the pool, which was very helpful.

We bought a bottle of wine in the bar and we settlled in the conservatory, enjoying the view. The chairs there are somewhat discoloured, but we did understand why: it's hot there if it's sunny. But then we moved to the wooden chairs outside the swimming pool.

We enjoyed our breakfasts (it's not mentioned on the menu, but they do vegetarian sausages) and it was enough to keep us going, well, strolling around Betws-y-Coed.

We had a lovely stay, and we had a lot of fun with the owners of the place. Mike (my husband) and the owner (Jaap) were the only ones in shorts - it was 19C.

We'll be back.
