When we first entered the restaurant we thought it seemed a bit formal but it was actually quite relaxed and friendly.

A very wide menu - making it difficult to choose! We opted for a vegetarian choice which was lovely. The dessert was also excellent.

Warning : booking essential!!
Gripe : After reading some excellent publicity and reviews, we thought we would call in for a meal. Unfortunately we hadn't booked and the staff (a couple of young lads) told us there were no vacancies for dinner that evening. Fair enough we thought, perhaps we could just have a drink before we departed the way we had come, back down the 10 minute walk into Betws-y-coed. Oh, sorry we were told, we're not a pub , we can only serve drink to residents and diners.
OK - final chance the next night and we called in on chance early-ish about 7.30 pm only to be informed again that they were fully booked for dinner. This is like Monday / Tuesday early on in the week.
So, two disappointed and disgruntled customers departed back into Betws with a resolve that they wouldn't get a third chance off us.
So, can't really comment on the food or service but feel the staff may have been taking the easy option by saying they had no vacancies. I don't expect they get paid any more if they serve more people - "shhh - tell 'em we're full and we'll get away home earlier" rather than having the extra work of a second sitting. Having worked in the restaurant trade, I know this happens. I don't remember the last place I went where the restaurant manager was unable to 'squeeze us in'.
And NOWHERE on the website does it mention residents/diners only - we are not a public bar. Nowhere obvious anyway. Perhaps that could be sorted?
Thanks for reading.

I am sorry to hear that you were unable to eat in our restaurant. We are a busy hotel restaurant and whenever possible we do do second sitting but it is not always possible. This is the reason why ,booking, even on week days, is recomanded to avoid disapointment.
We do have a restaurant lincense only, and this is clearly mentioned on the menu board outside.
We do hope you will visit us again.

Very homely and a relaxed atmosphere. The Sunday lunch was superb and a nice choice of beers. Could have stayed all day if not for returning to work. The best around for quality food.

Popular with tourists and locals alike, the food here is really well presented and tasty.
The service is really slow (otherwise I would have rated this as a 5*). We had to chase the main menu twice and then they took so long to bring the desert menu that we went without dessert which was a shame as based on the main courses it would have been delicious!
My main tip is to book. We arrived early on a Monday night and before long it was packed which is no surprise given the quality of the food.

The owners of Ty Gwyn have maintained much of the 16th century building features while offering up-to-date menu choices, using mostly local ingredients. The result is a charming place to have a great meal with very good service. We lucked out the first night when we stumbled in as there had just been a cancellation. But after the superb meal, we made sure to book a table for the next night.
