“Good location, good food, good room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

But not quite 'very good'.

Although our 'superior' room was wonderfully clean, spacious and airy and although the food was very good, well prepared and presented, the place doesn't quite float my boat.

I've been trying to put my finger on what it is about this place which doesn't give me the confidence to lift it up from 'average' to very good'.

Perhaps I didn't find it but it seems to be lacking somewhere 'snug'. I did see a lounge but it was in darkness and, unless I looked in at the wrong time, did not seem to be in use.

For a place of this size and maturity I would have expected a comfy lounge;somewhere to sit in peace and quiet for pre or post dinner drinks. Equally I would have expected a quiet restaurant in which to dine

What I did find was a brightly lit restaurant which seemed out of sorts with the rest of the place. It was quite loud in the restaurant. To be fair, it was a bank holiday weekend and there were a couple of young families staying there. We do understand that children are of course noisy but I guess that we shouldn't have expected a country hotel restaurant to be quite so lively. The food and dining room service were great but we never quite felt as though we were in a restaurant, more like a canteen. I'm sure that others are OK about such style but we prefer somewhere a little more tranquil to enjoy dinner.

The hotel is in a great location, very well placed for Snowdonia and the attractions of North Wales. Beddgelert is a very attractive village set amongst quite dramatic scenery.

Stayed for 1 night for a family event, could not fault anything. Everywhere very clean. Friendly helpful staff. Rooms warm, showers good. Breakfast just what you would expect, plenty of it, well presented, hot and served by friendly staff.

Had used the hotel over 40 years ago and it's good that both the hotel and area are unspoiled.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in this beautiful part of Wales.

Just stayed at the Royal Goat and had a little trepidation given some of the reviews I had read.

Having taken 2 rooms it is clear the hotel is over time being updated as 1 room was lovely, well decorated and a bathroom which would not be out of place in top rated hotel. The other room was not to the same standard. The easiest way to describe room 2 is tired and dated.

They have free wi-fi, but you need to be careful which room you are in. Our room on the first floor had great access, but the one on the third floor could not pick it up.

When we checked in we were told Dogs are allowed in various rooms, but the instructions in the room are contradictory, and when we took the dogs into the residents lounge we were greeted with 'tuts' from other residents. The hotel need to decide where Dogs are allowed and then be consistent.

The hotel has a fantastic location, in a super village which is in an ideal position to explorer the area. The village has nice places to eat and drink, so you need not be confined to the hotel.

As others have said, the breakfast is good.

I would return, but would ask for the refurb rooms only.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have lovely views. Lower floors appear to get wi fi.

an excellent base for any expedition to climb mount snowdon, or any visit to the snowdonia area for that matter. The three rooms that we took all had great facilities, the breakfasts were spot on, and the meal we had in the restaraunt was very good too

As my wife has put the hotel is shown as dog friendly but is not. The breakfasts were great and the staff friendly and efficient. Unfortunately the layout of the public rooms meant there was no real ambience where you would like to spend the evening having a drink or meal although the menu looked inviting. The bathroom was mouldy and the basin hot tap didn't work. Bed excellent though.

Room Tip: Front of hotel as only good views

A warm welcome greeted us after our 6 hour drive from London. Our room was basic but bright and cheery. Tea and coffee making facilities( bit tight on the biscuits!) double bed(small) lovely views( room 22).
Bathroom was adequate, large soft towels, with a bath/shower, ok power, would have preferred a power shower, especially after walking all day. Bedding was rather stained and the carpet didn't look as though it had been thoroughly cleaned for a while.
Lovely lounge area for drinks with comfy seating. Big dining room with a warm, homely feel. The first night we were there, we ate in the restaurant. It was 'ok' no great shakes but also not terrible. Service throughout the stay was very good. Breakfast was superb and set us up for the day. We travelled a fair bit around, Portmerion, Anglesey, Llundudno, worth the driving as it was stunning. The snow capped mountains of Snowdonia took our breaths away- unfortunately due to the snow in the previous weeks the train into the mountains wasn't running. Also climbing was not advised.
Don't go expecting a nightlife- this isn't a city break. It is a beautiful, friendly, sleepy town, restaurants are shut by 9.30, although pubs open until 11 and do serve fairly decent pub grub. Go for the walks, views, babbly brooks, sheep, mountains and luckily for us glorious sunshine.

The hotel advertises being dog friendly but I don't think they were. We were basically allowed to take the dog into our room and out again!
We went across to the Saracen's Head to eat in the evenings because they allowed dogs in the bar and were dog friendly. We also discovered that most of the other residents of the hotel were also eating there in the evenings! Maybe the Goat could be more friendly and welcoming and its evening meal sales will tak off!!

I can understand that the Goat Hotel don't allow dogs in the dining room but why not in the lounge, where residents (and dogs) who have been out walking all day want to relax and have a drink?

On the other hand the breakfasts were lovely!

Room Tip: Staff will accommodate requests for rooms.
