Attraction details
Owner description: In a spectacular location, overlooking the Irish Sea RSPB South Stack Cliffs is a heathland paradise just waiting to be explored. Wind your way along the dramatic trails and take in the expansive views across Anglesey to Snowdonia and across the Irish Sea to the Llyn peninsula. There are great views of the iconic South Stack Lighthouse from Ellin's Tower. The heathland and sea cliffs are home to all sorts of wildlife. In spring and summer, marvel at the spectacular wildflower carpet covering the clifftops and seek out the rare spathulate fleawort, which grows nowhere else on earth! Carefully and quietly explore the edges of the heather and you might see lizards or even an adder. Visit Ellin's Tower for great views of the seabird city in spring and its puffins, guillemots and razorbills. Try to spot porpoise, dolphins and seals out to sea. Then you can browse in our shop, relax in the visitor centre and enjoy fresh food in our café. We welcome dogs on the reserve. They are allowed in Ellin's Tower, the shop and the entrance to the Visitor Centre but not in the café. Between July and November our flock of hebridean sheep will be grazing on Holyhead Mountain, please ensure dogs are kept under control around livestock. The Visitor Centre is open all year round except Christmas Day 10am - 5pm. Ellin's Tower is open from Easter to the end of September.

Visited early evening when the visitor centre was shut and still loved it! Lovely part of the Anglesey coastline (which part isn't?), nice view of lighthouse and birds on cliffs. Will return one day for the full experience.

“Wonderful Experience - And for Free!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

Elin's Tower at South Stack, Holyhead, can be reached by parking in the first car park you come to at South Stack (on the left hand side). Park your car and then talk the path at the middle of the car park through the beautiful carpets of heather. It's a well made gravel path that is very well maintained and the views from the path as you walk the 350yds or so to Elin's Tower are breathtaking.

You can go inside the tower, (dogs are allowed in too), and look through the binoculars at the birds nesting on the cliff edge. There is also a massive flat screen TV that plays live footage of other birds nesting that cannot be seen from the side of the cliff.

There are staff from the RSPB on hand to answer any questions and explain all about the nesting birds, their habitat and their breeding seasons. As with any free attraction there will be some tentative attempts to sign you up to the RSPB, which we did, but the freebie's that we got with it, and the amount of information more than paid for itself. We opted for the free bird book - it's come in really handy and useful for us.

“Friendly cafe/shop.”

Very friendly, helpful staff; excellent full breakfast (served 10-11am). Easiest to get your tickets for the South Stacks Lighthouse Tour here.
Visit nearby Ellins Tower for good views and knowledgable RSPB wardens.

“Stunning location with great walks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

Visited on a sunny August morning, a couple of car parks, the smaller first car park gives you the chance to walk across the cliff path to the RSPB visitor centre, here good information about the wildlife around at that time, unfortunately by late August the puffins have gone out to sea, but saw choughs for the first time. From here you can walk up the cliff for some really terrific views and perhaps climb Holyhead Mountain or head down to the lighthouse, we went back to the shop and cafe along the road where we had an ice cream on the benches outside with the best views on Anglesey! You only pay if you want to go to the lighthouse, but the best views must be from the clifftops.
