I was visiting Llangollen with my mum and my son on a day trip but we threw in a toothbrush just in case. We were ideally thinking about a cheap little B&B but walked in to the Royal, just to have a look due to its superb location.
The chap who greeted us offered us the room key and advised us to have a look at the room and if we liked it he would do us a deal. The room was really clean and spacious and offered us great facilities for our little odd group. He did do us a good deal too, knocking about £30/£40 off the usual rate.
Breakfast was great - plenty of choice and everything was well presented. We didn't have evening meal there, although the menu looked great and good value too, as we had already decided to eat out elsewhere.
The Hotel has great features, the old furniture in reception is very interesting and the decking at the back of the restaurant, overlooking the river, looked really inviting - if only we'd been staying longer! The views from our room made the price worthwhile. However, it has seen better days and I think the lack of visitors has made it less well-kept than it really should be. With a bit of investment it could be a 4-star hotel, but it has to get the trade in first, I suppose. I think a little more attention to detail on the cleaning front would help - the carpets required more than the light vaccuming they had obviously been getting.
If you're staying in Llangollen, which is an excellent place to visit with plenty to see and lots of nice places to eat, I would definitely recommend a night at the Royal Hotel.
