“Royal hotel”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

Just stayed at the royal for a two night stay. As other travellers state the hotel is in desperate need of some TLC . We stayed in room 108 which is known as the Gothic room. It was very clean and a fantastic view of the river from both windows . It was very noisy though at night due to being over the main road. the owner was very helpful but the breakfast was awful. Toast barely done, bacon was cheap and the sausages were the cheapest they could get full of rusk and no meat!!!!!!hence we didn't do breakfast this morning
The Italian' Fuzeys ' though just around the corner was EXCELLENT... Food and service second to none and very reasonable. Word of warning though best to make a reservation as they fill up quickly .
Llangollen is a very beautiful valley but wouldn't stay at the Royal again though unless it was up dated.

We stayed for couple of nights, the room was lovely and suited our needs. The hotel is in a prime spot in llangollen and is in need of some TLC which I am sure would generate even more income if the owners were to invest in this place. The staff were pleasant however one tip for the chap who served breakfast is to make little more effort with his appearance as he did look a little bit scruffy which was a shame as he was really attentive and pleasant. The outside seating area was lovely overlooking the river, I would recommend this hotel as the staff are nice, the rooms nice and the breakfast gorgeous however it does need sprucing up inside. Good value for money and I would stay again.

I can see what the other reviewers mean - this hotel has seen better days, but the staff (especially Albert) are very friendly and helpful, the room (109) was smashing/comfortable/clean with a great view, and the wi-fi free in the bar. The shower was a bit temperamental, but it was lovely to listen to the river and the chiming clock. Breakfast could be served earlier, but the number of nice restaurants and cafes nearby means the lack of dinner is not a problem.

Overall, I'd certainly go again happily as long as I got a nice room, but I accept the Royal might not be to everyone's taste. If you like steam trains by the way, this is an ideal location for you!

This hotel in a stunning setting by the side of the River Dee is in need of a lot of upgrading. The decor, carpets and furniture are very 'tired' and tatty.
However, We had a very warm welcome and the bedroom and ensuite were spotlessly clean. Unfortunately the mattress on my bed was extremely uncomfortable and desperate for replacement.I didn't sleep very well. The room facilities were good (flat screen TV, plenty of coffee and tea and biscuits)
The full English breakfast was good. For £45/ single room including breakfast was good value. I wouldn't have wanted to pay any more.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlook the river and the view is stunning. A public clock at the front of hotel...

Like other reviews, we did have higher expectations of this having looked at some photos on the website. Our room was pleasant enough and clean, if a little dated. It was the rest of the hotel that was a little shabby with a damp smell pervading through the corridors. There was no breakfast menu and although there were some cereals the expectation was that you would have a cooked breakfast, which I was a little disappointed with - finding the fried eggs and mushrooms swimming in oil, which put me off finishing it. All in all this could be a fabulous hotel as it has amazing views of the river and in a great location and staff are pleasant and friendly. It just needs some TLC and a little more finesse.
