“Tired hotel in an excellent location”
Reviewed August 7, 2011

I stayed at the Royal Hotel having got what seemed a fairly good deal on a room rate. Sadly the hotel has seen better days, with shabby carpets and old-fashioned bedrooms that have not been updated for decades. On the plus side, the location and views are great and the hotel is clear. But the breakfast was also a disappointment, and unnecessarily so. Why serve two very cheap sausages when a single locally produced sausage would have made a so much better impression. Best to avoid unless you get a very good rate!

Stayed at this absolutely beautiful hotel with my husband.
Booked for 2 nights but so impressed, booked for a 3rd night as didn't want to leave! From checking in, the staff were wonderful and couldn't have been more helpful. The hotel itself is ideally placed, in the centre of Langollen, within walking distance of local tourist attractions, plus local restaurants and bars. (Although the hotels own bar and restaurant were fantastic!). We had a couple of meals also at The Cornmill, approx 1mins walk from the hotel and the food / service and views there were to die for! The room at The Royal had an idyllic view of the river, was lovely to wake up to the sounds of the river below our room. The breakfast, served from the hotel's restaurant, with the most beautiful views of the river and the bridge, was one of the best breakfast's we have ever had, and very fulfllling! The staff at breakfast were so attentive and could not have done more. Our room was so lovely, with a river view and a nice, modern, spacious bathroom, plus a very comfy bed! The housekeeping staff were excellent and the hotel is so clean.
The decking, overlooking the river was beautiful and a lovely place to relax and read. It was also so nice to return to the hotel's beautiful, ornate bar in the evening, where we met so many people, from all over the world!
This hotel is charming! It has so much history! The family who run it are so nice and friendly! If you are staying in this area, can't recommend it enough, can't wait to return!

Room Tip: room 109 had views to die for!

We stayed in a lovely double room with a great elavated, dramatic view over the bridge and river. The room was clean, tidy with on suite bathroom and plenty of character as was the rest of the hotel generally. The staff were friendly, approachable and helpull. Our two day stay was unfortunately marred though by the cheapo unapetising breakfasts (both days). Everything on the plate was low quality and although it seems a shame to hinge a recommendation on a sausage, for me it's enough not go back there. I have seen better value sausages on a fairground hot dog bun. They tasted like they'd come out of a tin. It's such a simple thing to remedy and I hope they do because this really is a nice hotel in a fantastic location.
I'd definately recommend the Corn Mill Resteraunt (just accross from the Royal Hotel, overlooking the river). We had a really nice meal on the last night and plan to go again.
In summary then, Lovely hotel, breakfast best eaten elsewhere.

We stayed in the Turret Suite which has a large lounge area and a seperate large bedroom with en-suite bathroom. The facilities in this room are great, as are the views over the River Dee. The hotel itself looks a little dated, but is clean enough. The hotel has a large bar area with a large outside terrace overlooking the river. We didn't dine here in the evening so I can't comment on the food, however the breakfast was very nice. Overall this hotel is good value for the money and is in an ideal central location and has adequate parking facilities. Llangollen is a great little town to visit and considering its size, is suprisingly lively on a Saturday night.

The Royal on the face of it is a splendid old hotel situated in the centre of a town however the inside does not reflect its glorious location and frontage. The foyer is tired and worn. The gentleman on reception was helpful but not over helpful and had to be prompted to reveal the location of the car park.

The corridors up to the rooms are tired, dated and the carpets are threadbare. I had a room at the front of the hotel. It was decent sized but very dated. The bed was very squashy or used but was clean and did give a suprisingly good nights sleep. Although slightly down at the heal the room was not dirty. The bathroom was old but clean. (though did smell a bit musty)

I did not use the restaraunt or bar.

Breakfast was slightly haphazard. Two members of staff were wandering round but did not seem that effective at serving. One of which was in a very dishevelled uniform and looked more like he should be doing the gardening. Basic things like no milk on the table or clearing tables after they were used were not been done. An older gentleman appeared later and was very diligent and polite and made sure that everyones needs were met.

The reasteraunt is in a stunning room which overlooks the river. The breakfast when it arrived was massive and was worth the wait. It was hot and very filling. The toast was also good not the usual slightly warm and brown stuff you get in some B&B's

On check out the receptionist was very helpful and polite and quite different from the evening receptionist..

This hotel is passed its best and has so much potential. I was on a discounted rate which I found on the internet.. I am not sure I would have been happy to pay the full price.

Perfect location for all attractions in North Wales and right on the river Dee.
The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly.
Good bars and restaraunts within walking distance.
Even free Wi-Fi in our room.
I would highly recommend this hotel.
