Iv visited the wine bar for many years and always found it to be friendly and relaxing. Pip is the authority on anything alcoholic and has taught me a great deal of which I can surprisingly remember very little apart from b52s and absinthe are not for work nights. Great place great staff!!!

We had a group of 7 with Dragon Tours and stayed for 2 nights. I had room 8 (top floor above restaurant) and the room was huge and full of character. Good size bed, huge TV (although I had to have the tour guide show me how to use the 2 remotes). Shower was a bit tricky – it took quite a while to warm up, then it was scalding, and had to turn down, but got it figured out by the 2nd time. Soap came out of dispensers – so the shower soap was hand-soap – hot shampoo. Comfortable bed and room had a skylight. Breakfast had fruit, yoghurt, cheese, ham, cereal at buffet, then ordered a veggie breakfast and service was very good. I did not eat dinner there, but it seemed busy. It was a bit noisy out on the street the first evening, but not too bad. Lots of things to do around the area, and good location.

Room Tip: room 8 was on top floor

Actually "good in most parts" would be a fairer description. The less good drew our attention by the quite stark contrast with the good.

The room was clean, spacious, well appointed, nicely decorated, good quality furniture, and quiet, with comfortable beds made up in spotless, fragrant white linen.

It was very difficult to adjust the water for a comfortable shower temperature, as the hot water (itself not under great pressure) kept the cold water at bay, resulting in scalding water; doing it the other way, the cold water blocked off the hot, resulting in a cold shower. It needed millimetric adjustments of both taps, while trying to keep out of the path of the scalding/freezing shower spray.

The toilet flushed the first time but would not do so again without the handle being vigorously "pumped". After two or three such episodes, that did not work either, and it required removal of the cistern lid and manual "dunking" of the float to overfill the cistern, whereupon "pumping" worked again -- once. Considering that the room was serviced at least once during our two-night stay, one must presume that the cleaner also cleaned the toilet, and flushed it (or tried) -- did they not notice a problem?

Gales' restaurant is evidently considered to provide really good food. Certainly the duck leg I had for supper was very tasty, and the jug of wine was very drinkable. Service was quite acceptable and the staff were polite and friendly. The only vegetables provided were a surround of water cress, very prettily done, and a very small bed of halved new potatoes, well concealed beneath the duck leg, all served in an enormous soup plate which regrettably accentuated to daintiness of the portion. I confess that I am probably a philistine when it comes to haut cuisine, but with at leas one local produce shop a minute's walk away, I can't see what's wrong with offering a small variey of vegetables in season to those of common palate, like me, perhaps served in a side bowl so as not to spoil the artistry of the dish. The wine was served in an elegantly slender glass jug but water came in an enormous (±2 litres), thick glass jug of the kind you might expect to find on a boarding school refectory table. It did rather spoil the artistic effect -- could they not have used their pretty wine jugs for water as well?

Breakfast was also served in the restaurant. The light version comprised what you would expect, and average. The toast was made from supermarket square sandwich loaf, which we found surprising, given that there's a local baker selling fresh bread a minute's walk away.

All in all, apart from the bathroom, we had a very comfortable stay. We would stay there again -- but we'd want a better bathroom!

Room Tip: Check that the bathroom works!

Nice pleasant helpful welcome. Bedrooms ok. Bathroom in 16 needs modernising with new shower head and thermostat requires attention. Some soaps and shampoo's would have been nice. main gripe was from a hygiene point of view. Carpets in bathrooms is unacceptable and I felt uncomfortable being bare footed in there. Tiles please. Beds comfy and a goodnights sleep had.
Breakfast next door in the Wine bar was great and overall the whole experience was excellent value for money.
Thanks

My Girlfriend & I had amazing time staying at Gales. the bed was so comfy we didnt want to get up. We stayed in Flat 12, just at the top of the stairs, expected it to be nosier but was reasonably quiet. The rooms are full of character with exposed timber beams, the only thing that i found strange was the large 42" plazma on the wall :).

Gales is located a stones throw away from the river dee, and the staff are SO friendly!

All in all 5* and as Arnie say's "I'll be back!"

We stayed for four night in Cottage 21 owned by the hotel just up the street. These are bright, clean, spacious apartments with a patio on the riverbank. A few things were missing when we arrived but all was put right within an hour. This is a quiet street and great for a night's sleep. The kitchen is well equipped though we only used it as a bar. The breakfast at the hotel was very good though limited in choices. All staff smiled and served us well.

We only stayed one night but liked it a lot. A quirky place with uneven floors and doors but
full of character. Comfortable and clean. We were above the wine bar and there was music playing until about midnight but it was tuneful not too loud and did not disturb us.
Breakfast was good. Would stay again.
