Erw Gerrig Cottage is in a fantastic location with amazing views of the valley right from the front door and garden. There are beautiful walks starting virtually on the doorstep suitable for a family stroll or a longer walk with a backpack and picnic.
If this is all that matters to you then this is the place for you.
However, if the standard of the accommodation matters at all to you then be very careful. With the exception of the bedding, everything in the cottage is old, battered or dirty.
There isn't a single window with clean, clear glass, the paintwork is dirty, scuffed and peeling everywhere you look. The kitchen surfaces and cupboard interiors were all sticky and greasy and both the living room and kitchen floors were filthy.
On arrival and having seen the standard of the cleanliness, we decided to only use certain cupboards and shelves and clean those ourselves. We still spent 2 hours cleaning the kitchen and bathroom before we were happy enough to unpack our bags. The cloths we used in the kitchen and bathroom needed throwing away after using.
The cooker and oven were so greasy they both started smoking just while heating up, before we even cooked anything on them.
The exposed beams and stone work shown in the pictures may seem to add character to the cottage and give a warm and cosy look but are in fact thick with dust and dirt and both ancient and new cobwebs and mouse droppings. Fresh droppings and snail trails across the living room floor each morning only added to the feeling of griminess.
We know what to expect with regards country living and the occasional wild life incursion into houses is not surprising but some of the signs we saw were very obviously months old and no effort had been made to clean or clear them. A clear health hazard.
The 2 acre field to the rear of the property was so overgrown with nettles and brambles as to make it unusable and the front garden (with the amazing views) was overgrown and full of dead plants and flowers. The garden table with fixed seating was rough and chipped with peeling paint and felt unsafe with more than one person sitting on the same side
Having spent 22 years in the Army, I am more than able to make the best of my accommodation but having booked this cottage for a week, we decided that 2 nights here was enough and left 5 days early.
The cottage has a great deal of potential but unfortunately the low standard of maintenance and cleaning mean we will not be back and cannot recommend it to anyone else.
Both of the stars I give this cottage are for the location, none are for the accommodation.

Just returned from a three night stay, will certainly be returning for a longer visit. Perfect setting , views amazing. Very comfortable cottage and we received a very warm welcome. Very dog friendly garden .
We stayed here for 4 nights in June - myself, my partner, our 8 year old daughter and our dog.
The cottage is lovely, with such unique, period features such as the beams and the cute little door between the upstairs bedrooms. The layout is a little odd, as if you're in the main bedroom (on the mezzanine overlooking the sitting room) you either have to go down and up 2 flights of stairs to the bathroom or sneak quietly through the other bedroom. But for a few nights it was fine.
The wood burning stove was great and we lit it every night.
The cottage was truly dog friendly with secure fences all round so we could let our dog out safely for a romp around.
The setting was lovely and at nights all you could hear was the rushing of the river in the valley and the squawking of some baby owls in a nest nearby. In the daytime the birdsong was lovely and a car only went past about once every half hour.
Would definitely recommend for a romantic break for a couple with a dog!

We rented this cottage for my sister's hen do and were very impressed. The cottage was absolutely beautiful and the location was stunning. When we arrived, the cottage was clean and tea and coffee had even been left out for us.The cottage itself had some beautiful rustic features, and we enjoyed eating in the front garden where there was a beautiful view over the hill and we could hear the river. We were surrounded by beautiful countryside with Llangollen only a few miles away. When I phoned regarding a query, the owners were very friendly and helpful.I would definitely come here again - thank you!

Wonderful cottage, excellent facilities, and wonderful walking in the immediate area. The solid fuel wood burner adds to the atmosphere, and the wonderful silence was great. Lovely walk along the river in the bottom of the valley. Great to be able to take the dogs with us - we were all made to feel so welcome. Plenty of local pubs for good meals for when we wanted to eat out. Will be recommending to all my friends - and hope to be back soon.

I have just returned from my third stay at Erw Gerrig cottage (the largest of the 3 cottages available). The owners Rob and Mary Lou Kershaw clearly really care about their guests and ensure they are equipped with everything they need with plenty of attention to detail such as tea, milk, biscuits, fresh flowers and plenty of logs for the wood-burning stove waiting for you in the cottage on your arrival. The cottage itself is spacious & well-decorated - very modern & well-equipped but with plenty of olde-world charm with it's original features such as exposed beams & the minstrels gallery bedroom overlooking the fireplace in the sitting room with the "hobbit's" door through to the second bedroom. It is very comfortably furnished with fantastic comfy beds & fresh bedding, and it has a lovely cosy home-away-from-home feel to it. This is by the far the most well-appointed holiday let I have ever stayed in - you will truly want for nothing. The location is simply breathtaking, with stunning views over the Ceiriog valley, river Ceiriog and surrounding hills in every direction. The area itself is fantastic for walkers and adventurers with plenty to see and do - I can highly recommend the pony trekking, quad bike trekking & clay pigeon shooting at Pontymeibion, just 5 mins walk up the road, plus a visit to Pistyll Rhaedr, the highest waterfall in the UK & approx 20 mins drive away through breathtaking scenery, is a must - you will feel like you've been transported to the set of the Lord of the Rings! But for the less adventurous & those who want to do nothing but relax then Erw Gerrig is the perfect getaway & trust me - you will feel instantly de-stressed as soon as you walk through the door! I can't recommend Erw Gerrig highly enough and have just booked my 4th stay in July as I just can't wait to go back.
