Don't really know what people are complaining about, our stay was fantastic! This is a very old historic hotel which is being restored gradually. Our room was excellent, level of cleanliness extremel good and the restaurant top class. The location is fantastic, we went to relax and that's exactly what we did. Staff were lovely and river views second to none. Really good!

My partener & I stayed at the Chain bridge hotel recently 25.9.2009 as we were attending a famliy wedding. We origanally were booked in for two nights but only stayed one. In its heyday the hotel must have been a wonderful place to stay, but now its very tired & in need of a total refurb. On our arrival we booked in first inpressions were not good, the lobby smelt musty & was in need of a coat of paint. We were allocated room number 41 which was supposedly a room which had been recently refurbished. We had had concerns before arriving due to reveiws on trip advisor. I had rung the hotel this resulted in us being allocated this room. The link corridors smelt damp & musty and I dont think had been cleaned for sometime as there were dead flys on a fuse box. We got to our room and were greeted by a 1970's time warp, the decore was extremely dated & tired, the tiles in the bathroom were mustard & olive green with mildew as a added extra. The bed was very old with a lumpy mattress though linnen was clean. The windows hadn't been cleaned in weeks which mared a wonderful view of the river. The balcony had not been swept. The breakfast was served on cold plates with luke warm food. The dinning room in farness was the best room in the hotel and did have superb veiws on the river. I could go on but I think you get the picture. We checked out a day early & found a B&B in the town for half the price which was excellent. I would strongly advise not to use this hotel until it is refurbished.

We had had a pleasant walk up from Llangollen, and were tempted into the Chainbridge Hotel by the "Welsh Cream Teas" sign at the top of the drive. Sitting at one of the grubby tables near the reception area, we were told by the unsmiling receptionist to order teas at the bar. When someone eventually turned up I asked for a list of cakes available, and was told that they didn't have any cakes. There was another large advertisement for scones, cream and jam with tea in the bar itself, so I said we'd settle for the scones instead. I was told they didn't have any of those, either. So our afternoon tea was - quite literally - a cup of tea. It also states on the hotel sign at the end of the drive that they have a 3-star AA hotel rating. Can this really be true?

Wish we'd read some of the reviews about the Chain Bridge before we went. We asked Legacy Hotels, who we booked through, for a river view room. Fair enough they didn't guarantee this but did completely lie when they said rooms were allocated on arrival. So we arrived early. And got what can only be a 'spare' poorly furnished room (which appeared to have been divested of a lot of the essentials, presumably used to re-furnish other rooms by way of replacements) with broken taps, one glass, cold water tap not working properly, no phone (so how were we supposed to use the proferred room service!?), only one chair, only one side table (you start to get the picture) and what's worse -,a view of a skip, plastic buckets and kitchen mess below - and kitchen smells wafting up. Delightful. If we had been told, as turned out to be the case, that rooms were allocated on booking, we would have asked Legacy to guarantee we got a river view or not take/confirm our booking. As it was, we were led to believe we'd only miss out if we got there after other guests. Not so, we were really early and lots of people arrived after us. We call that bare faced lying. Neither the hotel nor Legacy want to know - we have asked them the outright question - as they profess to have listened to the call - were we told rooms 'are allocated on arrival?' but they refuse to answer a straight question. Just saying - which we agree with - that a river view wasn't guaranteed. As it was, I suppose a river view might have saved the break - but the service was pretty dire too - especially reception. And given our disappointment their refusal to even consider booking us a river view table for dinner was un generous to say the least. The patio, where one might have sat, given we didn't end up with a balcony which the river view rooms had, was disgraceful - broken bricks and rubbish still on the somewhat tatty furniture so we couldn't sit outside at all. DON'T GO THERE - it's a lovely view - but not worth the money or the discomfort.

Hotel in need of major refit. Decor very dated. Stairways cluttered with "fresh sheets". Entire place smelt old & musty. Staff efficient but not very helpful or happy. High prices for low standard accomodation.

This is a great location, between the River Dee and the Llangollen canal. Across the the river, you can see the Llangollen steam railway trains passing over a viaduct. The view is only spoiled by the dreary, depressing Chainbridge hotel.

This is a shabby, decaying place of the standard I thought we had moved on from many years ago. My wife is disabled so we had a ground floor room, entered directly from the canal towpath. It had decor and furnishings from the 1970s. I pulled back the net curtain to look at the view and got a face full of cobwebs. The spiders are obviously left undisturbed by cleaners.

The bathroom was small and dark with plastic accessories. There were no glasses and the smears on the mirror remained throughout our stay. The 'hot' water never rose above luke warm. When I showered, the floor became flooded as the shower screen did not reach down to the bath. When the room was serviced, they took away clean towels, left damp ones and did no cleaning.

I complained and they visited again. They broke out the vacuum cleaner, left clean towels and a clean bath mat. The original bath mat was still in exactly the same position, in a pool of water.

For our first meal in the restaurant, we both had chicken. It was hard on the outside and difficult to cut into. Inside, it was dry. We both left most of it. The second night, my wife had steak, which she thought was not too bad. I had baked vegetable pasta. It contained courgette and mushrooms and was in a sauce of the consistency of milk, but lacking the flavour of milk. I can't imagine anything less appetizing.

After this we tried a bar meal. I had a pub standby, stake and ale pie. The meat was hard and dry, even though it was floating in gravy. The tables in the bar featured salt pots that were empty for the whole of our 4 day stay. They also ran out of two types of lager, coffee, and scones for the advertised cream teas.

This hotel has nothing to recommend it but the view and we were only too happy to get away at the end of our stay. This is a beautiful part of the country. See it from somewhere else.

four of us visited the chainbridge for sunday lunch. the setting and surroundings are truly fantastic, but the chain bridge hotel didnt create that.
i meal was not upto the kind of standard you would expect for the money you pay.
we realised after our meal that there had been no mashed potatoes on our plates, my friend queried it with the waitress who was foreign she replied "to have boiled or mashed potatoes with our meal you have make a special order with the chef".we asked about it at reception and were told " its none my business" we will not go back and would certainly not recommend it to a friend
