Owner description: Built in the late 13th century and reputed to be haunted by a past resident, this picturesque castle was built for King Edward I and is a perfect example of the "concentric castle" design.

Conwy Castle is quite small which makes it easy to work out where all the rooms were – e.g. King’s Chambers, Chapel, Bakehouse etc. It would have been easier if more information had been given, the free flyer is quite sparse but I suppose they want you to buy the guidebook. If you are mobile enough climb to the tops of at least some of the towers – the views are stupendous and it’s also easier to work out the layout of the castle from above.

There is an admission fee, but I assume that contributes towards the upkeep of the castle. I enjoyed the visit but wouldn’t go again.

Castle was fantastic piece of history but the directions / explanations were lacking. Did not know what I was looking at and had difficulty reconstructing each room - I would have expected them to do that for me

Conwy Castle is atmospheric, though entry is rather steep: over £5 for an adult. The grounds have not been well maintained: there were dead pigeons in a number of places, and the Well was particularly grotty. However, the views from the walkways are excellent. There is very little information about the Castle itself - mostly on a few boards around the grounds.
Our biggest gripe was the Gift Shop: they overcharged us for our items and knew it: when we spotted the error on the receipt, they immediately admitted the mistake (so obviously knew what they were doing when they overcharged) and spent ages organising the refund. Shame that they are either deliberately short-changing tourists, or are so lazy that they can't be bothered to acknowledge the mistake at the time, and just hope you don't spot it.
Beware the Gift Shop!

Although the idea of visiting a castle sounds exciting, we find most castles are pretty dull as tourist attractions unless you know a lot about the unique history of the site. Conwy Castle is definitely impressive in it's own right, and it is one of the relatively rare castle sites that is worth paying to visit the inside.

Even on a wet and windy day you can find shelter in the corners of this splendid array of walls and turrets. There are stairways up to the top of some of the turrets with magnificent views (we could see the snow in Snowdonia) in all directions and gulls surfing the wind. Very easy to lose the family, but they'll be enjoying themselves.
