“Avoid!”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

What a strange strange place. You enter a very dark night-club like bar area before you are taken up to the actual restaurant. I should have taken that first impression as a hint of what was to come...

The restaurant itself is better in atmosphere and style, but the food - when you eventually get some - is just a pointless mash. There was no fun in eating it - all dishes had the same boring and bland taste.

It took a good while for our food to arrive, so I had some time to observe the waiters: this is an unbelievably inefficient place, I can just recommend it to restaurant improvement TV shows! The restaurant wasn't exactly big, and about 80-90% filled. According to their own statements this was "a quite busy day".

The five waiters I counted took turns in working hard to look busy without actually doing anything - they were badly trained and two good waiters could have done the same job much better. Considering how long it took other tables to get their food, the kitchen simply couldn't cope with just a half filled restaurant - it seems they understaffed the kitchen while overstaffing the service. Or both are incompetent.

In the end all of this was just amusing, except for the bad food. Avoid this place.

“We ate at a great Indian Restaurant. Regrettably this was not it.”
Reviewed June 21, 2012

The Spice Lounge could and should be good, nay, great. It has the atmosphere, but the execution was... unusually poor. It was so poor that we had to phone the restaurant from the table to get the waiters to clear away the remains of the poppadums which had been finished for almost an hour! We watched loads of tables not being served in a timely manner by the waiters who were walking around the dining area looking for jobs not to do!

The starters arrived fairly promptly after that and were half acceptable. The chef needs a better Onion Bhajee recipe. His were dry, well, unless they'd been waiting on the pass for the hour or so we'd been waiting for them. The chicken element was succulent and obviously fresh. And attentive service brought the mains fast. We also got an apology from the chef. But the chef wasn't to blame, Front of House was.

They were meant to be two distinct mains and a side dish. Each tasted the same, except one was unreasonably sweet and red, the others less so and brown. The lamb was dry, the chicken succulent. They came with an exceptionally greasy naan. The thing is, this was a set meal for two. One naan for two needs to be halved! It wasn't.

As we were giving up trying to eat the food a waiter asked if the food was good. We explained its deficiencies and he went to tell the chef. Then another waiter asked the same thing. Same conversation. No result. Then a message that the chef was rather busy arrived! Well, if he was then Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares was happening in his kitchen! Acceptable high street Indian food is not hard to prepare. Serving a full English Breakfast with all the trimmings is far harder!

We suggested that a bill that reflected our experience be presented, so, when a full price bill arrived we offered 50%. They chose to waive the bill. We were happy to pay half, but we thank them for waiving the bill. It would be a great place for a date - you just don't get interrupted by things like food!
