We visited the Crown a few weeks ago while visiting Abergavenny..our second visit to this charming little gastropub in a pretty setting in the heart of the community...and again had a delicious sunday lunch. What a little gem this place is.,though just a little out of the way but well worth the drive. The place has a real buzz about it and gets really busy so always best to book. Its also a proper locals pub with regulars chatting away at the bar. Ran by cheerful and friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The traditional sunday roast was absolutely delicious with melt in the mouth beef, proper gravy, real roast potatoes,a good choice of fresh vegetables and a huge yorkshire pudding, ample portions and at a very reasonable price. Loved the rhubarb creme brulee...and what a good selection of desserts, spoilt for choice. Will most definately visit again whilst in the area.

Went as a table of 6 last Saturday evening - started with Pimms on the terrace enjoying the last of the sunny day. Friendly service by a waitress who knew all about every dish on the menu. Very impressed by the large selection of gluten free choices and every other dish could be adapted on request.
I had smoked duck starter and loin of venison to follow - both excellent. One highlight was a great dessert wine from Montbazillac (not expensive) - I had visited that estate last summer on holiday near Bergerac, so a lovely reminder of happy times. At £60 a head for the full works including all drinks and wine I thought it was great value. Well done - Oh a nice Laphroaig to finish whilst waiting for the taxi home.

There are very few inns that can successfully combine serving quality meals to diners and just drinks to locals but the Crown does just that. It is mainly a gastro pub but there are often locals having a drink and a chat at the bar and the Crown is the type of place that makes you wish you lived only walking distance away too! Our recent Sunday lunch there, sitting outside in the sun watching the buzzards flying over the Skirrid, was a real treat. I greatly enjoyed my crayfish and prawn starter, srved with delicious homemade bread, and my partner declared that is mushroom soup nd bread rolls was quite simply excellent. We both went for the roast beef served rare, just the way we like it, and accompanied by crispy roasties, first class Yorkshire pudding and a separately served selection of delicious veg. We both wanted a pudding but somehow found the strength to decline - our waistlines currently proving a testimony to the number of times we eat out! With a bottle of wine the bill for the two of us was £55 - worth every penny.

The beautiful view of the Skirrid mountain as we left the Crown, Pantygelli topped off a perfect Sunday lunchtime. From the warm welcome to the last bite of the rhubarb creme brulee, we were very contented visitors.

The beef, as promised, was pink and succulent and was served with a variety of vegetables and a princely sized yorkshire pudding. The pork, my mother said, was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. She was also happy that the chef had kindly added the yorkshire pudding she had asked for. The desserts were described as 'yummy' on the menu, but we all felt this was an understatement. The rhubarb creme brulee and panetonne bread and butter pudding were both enjoyed immensely.

The restaurant was almost full but the layout ensures each table has ample and comfortable room. The service was friendly and attentive.

We will certainly be back, very soon I hope! Thank you for a scrumptious afternoon.
