“Friendly and good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

We stayed in this hotel for two nights. The welcome was friendly and helpful. Although it is part of the small Brains chain of hotels and inns it had the feel of a family run establishment.
Our room was generously sized with a large comfortable bed and a nice two seater sofa. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided as was a hair dryer. There is good Wifi throughout the hotel.
The bathroom was roomy and had a good shower although it would have been improved by a small shelf unit for toiletries etc.
The grounds were well maintained with nice seating areas and we were able to take advantage of the glorious weather while enjoying a pint of Brains bitter.
The hotel has good parking and is an easy walk into Abergavenny, 10 to 15 minutes.

Room Tip: Our room (No.6) was outside the main hotel building and was quiet with car parking at the door.

Stayed here 2 nights and this really is a first class place, my room was massive and very clean, very modern and only a little road noise, the breakfast was also very good too. I also eat both nights in the resturant and this too was very good washed down with great local welsh cider. The staff were a delight very friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I hve falen in love with Abergavenny and will be back next year, and will definatly will be staying at Plas Derwen again.

Enjoyed an excellent lunch at Plas Derwen recently. Loads of meat with a good selection of vegetables and a huge yorkshire pudding. We had our 5 year old grandson with us and the staff were brilliant with him and even provided a colouring book to keep him busy. It was a pleasure to have such good service and good food.

This has been a good comfort spot in the past. Although I haven't been there in 6 months or so, it had been really good quite consistently. It's not the type of place to splash on an exotic evening out, but a good stop for a bite. Service was at times slow (no fault of the waitresses, but rather than they looked understaffed). Definitely worth a try. Sunday roasts are good

Booked for one night and asked for a quiet room. The room fronted onto the A40 and traffic was continuous until after 11pm and then started again before 6am. As the room was hot, I opened the sash window which nearly fell out and had no means of holding it up, but it didn't matter as the noise of the traffic was too loud to sleep whether the window was open or shut. Everything else about the hotel was fine with a well cooked breakfast and a decent room for the price.

Room Tip: Be firm if you request a quiet room and ask for an alternative if you are given one fronting onto th...

We booked an overnight through Booking .com as part of a trip down through Central Wales on our way through to Bristol.
The Hotel, which is a pub/restaurant with rooms, is well located on the outskirts and particularly suited if travelling through like us.
Rooms are separately located at the rear in converted outbuildings and residents are not troubled by the activities of the pub/restaurant.
The rooms are huge offering sitting and sleeping space and are well appointed with excellent beds. the ensuite bathroom is well appointed and of good quality.
Staff are very friendly and helpful. A problem with the Wi-Fi in the room was resolved immediately. (It needed re-booting).
Quality of the evening meal was good and value for money and the breakfast choice was excellent. Some latecomers were accommodated with a smile despite the breakfast service technically being over.
All together a great value for money stay.

Dropped in for a late lunch and was impressed with the range and quality of the food. Excellent choice of food from the main menu (see photo) as well as a special deal of two courses for £10.95 from a smaller menu. Food was prepared quickly and tasted fantastic. Very large hotel/pub with lots of dining space both inside and out. Large garden suitable for those travelling with a dog. Range of real ales available from Brains Brewery.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Plas Derwen is a fantastic pub restaurant which offers exceptional food at ordinary prices. Located within easy reach of the A40 and A465 (Heads of the Valleys Road), it was redeveloped to a high standard in April 2007. All our food is cooked to order, using produce from local suppliers, listed on the back of our weekly changing menus, enabling you to have a different dish with every visit. There is also a Specials board and a Fish Specials board for even more variety. This is a warm, welcoming venue with pastel colours and a large see through feature fireplace. The building dates back 600 years and the refurbishment has been sympathetically undertaken to reflect old meeting new. With contemporary furnishing, the traditional slant has been retained with many nooks and crannies around the pub. The Garden Room, Lounge Bar and double Conservatory are separate rooms offering different experiences. Some areas have leather sofas and leather tub chairs. ... more   less
