“Disappointed again”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Most of our friends love the food but we fail to find cooking that we can't do at home and we're not chefs. We have been for lunch three times in three years convinced that we must be missing the best menus. We always like the selection offered on the set lunch menu but one or more courses don't live up to expectations. Today the main cod course looked lovely, the veg parts were good but the cod, although perfectly cooked, had been ruined by scorched patches on the outside that smelled burnt and ruined the delicate taste of the fish.
The elegant 'jelly and custard' pud was delicious which will probably make me forget the fish by next year.

Luckily we have several good restaurants around which are better value.

The place is attractive and the service attentive.

“Memorable”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

A wonderful 2 night stay in the cottage which The Walnut Tree owns. This was a blissful retreat with a thoughfully stocked fridge so we could prepare breakfast. It meant we only had to tiptoe down the garden path for dinner. And what two dinners they were. Cocktails were fun and imaginative. Wine list is exemplary and the standard of cooking the equal of anywhere in the country. If you want to spoil yourself go here. Shaun Hill has been cooking up a storm for years and The Walnut Tree has all the hall marks of his greatness.

“Mainly very good but at these 'mainly' is not good enough”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Was treated to a belated valentines meal lunchtime last week, place was quite when we arrived. Owners wife (we assume) a women in her late 50's greeted us, or rather didn't. Obviously a smile was far too much trouble but I guess we all have our off days. Decided to choose from the À la Carte menu as the set lunchtime one is very limited indeed.

In short the starter (Thai Fish Cakes) was bland, the actual Fish Cakes being downed in a white sauce that tasted of nothing but cream, no hind of the Ginger described in menu description. My main course, Gloucester Black Spot Pork was absolutely superb, and proved that someone in the kitchen knew what they were doing, such s shame the same person did not do my other two courses.

Desert was a very uninspired pecan pie, I have had so much better from my local bakery for a fifth of the price - really very average at best.

Wine was fine if a tad expensive and things were not helped by being charged for drink we had not had - again, Mrs Miserable could not manage a smile with her apology.

Would mention that the decor is strange to say the least, an odd mishmash of clashing imagery, reminiscent of a first year show at an art collage ( I know, I had one).

We can think of may places locally that provide amore consistent level and quality and almost all are less expensive. May come again but will leave it a year or so to settle down,

“Fantastic Food, lovely setting”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Hope it still comes up to the standard it was over a year ago. Loved and enjoyed by the six of us that went. Want to go back, but so many places to go and visit, plus eateries in abundance, spoilt for choice, It is no wonder we have a weight problem in wales ( joking of course) it is there to enjoy, enjoy and relish their food and hospitality......

“Outstanding!”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Our favourite restaurant yet! Had the most excellent food we've ever tasted, every morsel had amazing flavours and the presentation was outstanding. The service and ambience was faultless. Such a shame it's not nearer for us as would love to go back and do it all again.
