When writing a review it is important to take into context the location of the hotel and value for money.

This Hotel is perfectly sited for wandering around the port, castle and town center of Canarvon. For the proice it was excellent we had a very large room in the converted coaching house at the rear of the property, it was great to have alarge kitchen where we could prepare a snack and sit and have a glass of wine. The Inn itself was quaint and had a very reasonable pub menu with many hearty stews rather than chips with everything mentality.

The Hotel was clean, the staff friendly and you got wat you paid for.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the coach house, (Quiter as away ffom the hustle of the inn, and you get the large kitchen and bathroom.

We have tried to renovate with care as we are only the caretakers for the future generation.

Along with 3 friends, I stayed at the Black Boy for 3 nights from Friday 14 September. When making the booking, I had requested twin rooms, but the booking confirmation said doubles. On querying this, I was offered a free upgrade to executive rooms, which would be configured as twins. With hindsight, it might have been better to have refused the upgrade. Our 2 rooms (Nos. 23 & 24) both had low beams and sloping ceilings. As originally configured, it was impossible to get into one bed in each room while standing. We were able to re-configure room 23 to avoid this problem, but not room 24. In room 24, getting out of the shower also involved stooping to avoid a sore head (not achieved on every occasion). Having said that, the rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, the shower and bath provided plenty of hot water, there was a large, simple to operate TV, tea/coffee facilities with biscuits and wi-fi.

Breakfasts were large with a good choice of cereals and fruit and numerous cooked options. There were, however, 2 disappointments. On Sunday morning, 2 of us ordered haddock only to be told a few minutes later that it was not available. The kitchen had obviously forgotten to tell the waiting staff of this. We were also unimpressed with the coffee at breakfast - very bitter and tasted like instant. Coffee aside, the quality of the breakfasts was very good.

The reasons we chose the Black Boy were the good reports on Trip Advisor and its entry in the Good Beer Guide. On Friday evening the first 2 pints were excellent. We then had a third round brought to us in the restaurant. It tasted of lubricating oil. This was unsurprising as, because, one of the beer pumps had been squeaking, someone decided to oil the pump mid-session. To make matters worse, all the pumps were similarly treated, thus rendering all the real ales undrinkable. We were given a full refund but the episode literally left a nasty taste in the mouth. On Saturday we were told that the beers were back to normal. They were certainly better, but there was still a hint of oil, so we had just the one pint each. By Sunday, the beers were fine.

We ate in the restaurant on Friday and Sunday. 7 of the 8 meals (including lamb cobbler, chicken breast, duck breast and battered haddock) were good, but the 'Fiery Dragon' curry on Friday was both bland and very dry.

Overall, despite the pleasantness and helpfulness of the staff, I'm afraid this was a disappointing visit.

Room Tip: If you're tall, make sure you're not allocated a room withh a low ceiling.

We are very sorry that you had problems during your stay. We may have to look at the issue of creating twins in the exec doubles . Most of our beds do split as twins , i think a member of staff was trying to be helpful by offering an upgrade which on this occasion was the wrong thing to do. Again i believe in experience with regard to the beer pumps was also caused by trying to please in getting rid of the squeak in hand pumps . As you noticed it was the wrong thing to do .
These issues will not happen again , But i do not wish to reprimand the staff as they were trying to please the customer although it did not this time.
I can only apologise for the problems on this occasion.

Fantastic stay here, we had a massive four poster bed in a huge room complete with kitchenette and lovely modern bathroom. The breakfast was cooked to perfection with lots of choice, we had dinner here too and the food was amazing. Would highly recommend this to everyone, the Inn itself was such a lovely building, a traditional Inn with lots of beams and plenty of character. Staff were very friendly, professional and helpful. Good value for money and we will return if in the area again. Best castle I have ever visited nearby!

Room Tip: Four poster room was absolutely gorgeous.

After a trip to the castle we were ravenous. We wandered around trying to find somewhere to eat and passed The Black Boy but it looked really busy.so we wandered some more. We passed The Black boy again and thought 'oh lets go in even if we have to wait' Once in we realised it went back and back and there was a sizeable dining room and so we plumped for the carvery. The staff were lovely and food delicious. I thoroughly recommend it.

Looked at a lot of other places prior to booking, but something told me to pick Black Boy. Glad I listened to that little voice. Building itself is OLD!, but they have down a great job reconfiguring the rooms. Bathroom for the age of the building was very nice, plenty of water pressure, very effienct. Had a king size bed, also comfortable and still had room to move around the room. Had little to no noise from other renters, and the location was very convient for visiting the castle. Within walking distance to 10 plus restaurants. Parking was available, but spaces were tight. All rooms were up a set of stairs, but staff was able and willing to assist with our bags. Great value I thought. Breakfast was very good, lots of choices.
