“Needs further excavation”

Segontium Roman Fort
Reviewed October 28, 2012

An interesting (and free) option to the castle here. As in Roman times the road runs straight through it and unfortunately there is only the one side of the road which has been partially excavated. So much to excavate and uncover which would bring extra interest and revenue into what is rather a sorry looking run down town! I don't understand councils who have such a history / heritage "on their grounds" but don't take advantage of it. Small museum (which could be so much bigger after further excavation) which is also free to enter! Nice.

I was a bit disappointed by the Segontium as first of all it was hard to find even though it is on the main road, we ended up passing it twice before we realised where it was. Then we went around the garden with the ruins in...they are very low to the ground and basically you see square shape area delimited by wall, I was not impressed but I have seen many impressive Roman ruins before so that might be why... The story behind it is very good and you get to know more when you watch the film during the tour of the castle in Caernafon.

We had hoped that this site might reflect the work that has gone into a similar site at Wrexham (to the east and near the Welsh border), however this was not the case. A well cared for and free to enter site but with little or no signage or interpretation.

Before the Normans came to build their Castle the Romans were in Caernarfon and built this huge encampment which left a mark on Welsh culture to this day. It is a pity that many tourists are not aware of this very important Roman site with a museum in Caernarfon. Well worth a visit.

Shame but funding stopped for places like this, not much to see and most relics removed from show? The gentleman we spoke to was most disappointed, run by volunteers I think.
