The Menai Hotel and Bar
Ranked #20 of 24 Bangor B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 4, 2013

Should have heeded the reviews of others. The place was difficult to find, the bartender was the receptionist (who didn't know how to scan a credit card or was too stoned to figure it out), and the rooms were awful! One of the mattresses had a spring poking out so we had to flip it over. The toilet didn't flush. The only good thing is that the college nearby was still on summer break so we didn't have to encounter a packed pool hall when entering and exiting the hotel.

Most of our guests find our guest house with no issues ,our staff are fully trained in the use of card machines and are always well dressed polite, non smoking & sober , the bathrooms are in full working order ,beds are replaced regular ,customers when been checked in are made aware that if they are unhappy with the room or anything else please inform us while they are staying with us ,we are only too happy to help .All guests are given a key to a separate door( Signed) residents only so they do not have to come in through the modern bar area that just happens to have 2 pool tables , a darts board , quiz & a fruit machine.

In brief, the room was poor. No hot water, a broken bedside table and mould in the bathroom. Next morning we left with nothing but biscuit crumbs on the floor. We received a call shortly after from the owner/manager swearing in real anger and stating that we were not to stay again and if we were still there he would have strangled us.

WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS HOTEL.

Well I just wish I had used trip advisor first .
Drove on to car park that is littered with beer cans and dead crisp packets , walked into a rather depressing bar area to sort out my 3 nights there
Staff did show me to my room and room was clean but oh no the bathroom was dark and covered in black mould around the shower end of the bath , did have clean towels though .
The menu was just updated but no mixed grill or steak as they had run out but I could have a burger, the starter was just soup of the day and that's the choice.
Now the Continental breakfast was a sight to behold ?????? Some toast from a broken toaster, cereals, ham and cheese , pot of yogurt , instant coffee, and yes one oh yes you did read it correctly one small sealed jam portion per placement on the table .
My advice please avoid it until they make there mind up are they a hotel or a cheap B&B

Room Tip: Yes some were else

First impression when you arrive, the outside could be cleaner, cigarette ends strewn around the entrance are not attractive, we entered through the bar which is a big spacious room and to be fair was comfortable to spend some time in during the evening having a drink. The reception and check in procedure was clear and within minutes we were in our room. The room was spacious but really could do with a revamp, good powerfull shower in the bathroom. It wasn't our first choice when staying in Bangor but a last minute booking restricts choice, its very close to the university which is what some people may be looking for and car parking is good, breakfast is 'ok' choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, toast etc but nothing cooked on offer, your asked to tidy your table before you leave but there is nowhere to put the used plates, cups & saucers etc so not really practical. Was it worth what I paid? probably yes because it didn't cost a lot.

Room Tip: if all the rooms are like ours you won't be short of space, just don't expect the Ritz.

Highly recommended!

Using my partner's Trip advisor account to write this review.

I stayed at The Menai for my stag do. It had been booked through a 3rd party agent and on receiving the paperwork a couple of weeks before checked on here for reviews. As it was a stag do and to be honest the price was decent, it didn't put me off.

On arrival was checked in and told where the breakfast room was. Strangely was told there isn't a spare key so make sure you don't lose the only one we give you. I stayed in a room with 3 other lads. The room itself was ok, bit crammed in for 4 people and not enough wardrobe room for all of our stuff. Tea and coffee facilities (not used but there if needed) and a working TV. Wall paper peeling off, bathroom showing a bit like a dripping drain and toilet was on its last legs. Staff weren't the friendliest but we didn't really care and went out for the night.

The hotel is in a good location near to the town centre but Bangor isn't massive so everything is within walking distance.

The next morning we went for breakfast. It is the worst set up i have ever known. No staff just signs everywhere telling you what to do. Breakfast consisted of:

1 plate of ham, 6 slices
1 plate of cheese, 8 slices
7 yoghurts (not in the fridge)
4 different cereals
2 loafs of bread
Croissants
Jam and butter

No option for a cooked breakfast which we were hoping for as we had been on the beer the night before and had a full day in the area paint balling and karting. Sign saying order cooked breakfast night before with an exact time you want it. Another sign to say clean the tables after yourself. Again i thought was strange as its a hotel not a food hall in some shopping centre. Also if they wanted it clearing then a bin would be handy and somewhere for plates to go etc.

That night we ate in the hotel bar whilst watching the FA Cup Final. The TV they had was a big old analog one and the picture wasn't brilliant but the food was actually good. We had a Menai Monster burger which was cooked well and tasty; beer not badly priced either.

Negative - we asked the only member of staff working behind the bar who also served the food if we could order 8 cooked breakfasts for the following day. He went to the kitchen and came back and said no, there isn't a chef working in the morning.

Brilliant - 8 paying customers wanting to pay extra for 8 cooked breakfasts being told no. You'd have thought it was a business trying to make money with a good customer service ethos and after all it is a hotel!! What a joke.

Following day treated ourselves to another breakfast of toast. If it wasn't for the fact we had booked white water rafting and had to be there for 9am we would have gone to a place just down the road from the hotel called Mick's which opened everyday and did cooked breakfast.

For a stag do and the fact that the bar downstairs served until 2am with lots a students and karaoke the hotel was ok. Cheap and didn't care about its customers and pretty much left alone, in fact i only saw a member of staff on check in and then didn't see anyone for the next 2 days.

However, if i had come with my partner we would have left within 20mins and found somewhere else. We have stayed in numerous hotels and B&B's all over the world and this ranks in the bottom 2. Not very good at all, not looked after and breakfast is nothing short of appalling. They really don't care and didn't want the hassle of making breakfast even f it meant extra money. I can't see how this business will last if they continue in the same vein.

If your coming with a family defiantly avoid. Not for families at all, like i said good for night life and thats probably what keeps it going. Late nights, loud music and people coming and going, which was good for us but if on a break not good at all.

This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in:

Arrived and bar lady took us throught to reception, she then asked for payment, which had been done on-line. Fortunately, her manager was present to sort this out.

Then, I was showed to me room- it looked nice, but on inspection was a bit grim. The toliet seat was wonky, the towel rail had fallen off, and hadn't been replaced. The heating was on, so it was warm, but I tried to open the window and a sign was present saying 'danger' window not fixed properly, will fall out if you open it! Madness.

I then made a cuppa, and the UHT milk curdled! When does that ever happen????

Breakfast was poor- a plate of hma, cheese, two loaves, some yoghurts just within their sell by date, and cereal.
Avoid!
