Agree with all of davidp's review. This hotel flatters to deceive, which is a pity given how lovely its location is.

We stayed in room 4 with lovely views over the bay - glorious when the sun shone in through the windows, but the lack of double glazing / heating / warm bedding felt like the room had been kitted out for the summer only. It was cold and wet for much of our weekend - as Wales often is.

Plumbing issues frequently raised in the guest book and on this site had not been resolved - our radiator did not work so we had to keep our towel rail turned on.

Our Sunday breakfast was interrupted by a fire alarm, and the staff couldn't turn it off for 15 minutes as the code had been changed. This highlighted a real lack of training or awareness of procedures.

All of this is a pity because the seafront at Aber is really pretty and it could be a great weekend break - but small hotels like this need to work much harder to justify their premium room rate.

Clean and freshly renovated and in prime position on Aberystwyth sea front. Suffers from absentee management and an associate hotel - Four Seasons - possibly with worse reputation. Title page of welcome pack is an A5 notice that "thieves will be prosecuted". First night and morning was totally without heat and very limited hot bath water. Following night was with excessive heat and a noisy bolier in the bathroom of room 3. Room 3 has bedroom and bathroom window sash jammed open and the view to the backyard obscured with a blind which cannot be fixed clear of the window. Annoying weak bedside lamp. Paper thin quilt no use for keeping warm at night with clean donkey coloured back up polyester blanket. Breakfast service in dungeon space without sea view. Breakfast freshly cooked but basic with the most "chip-shop" of processed sausages and tinned plum tomatoes redolant of the 60's.

Rang to say we would arrive later than expected (1820) so was a little surprised to find the room unheated. Reception said there had been a problem with the boiler but it was being fiixed. Sat on the bed with our coats on for 40 minutes drinking hot coffee and waiting for heat and hot water. No sign of either so we complained and were eventually directed to their sister hotel around the corner. For £85 a night I would have expected the room to be prepared; disappointing hotel and attitude of the management.

My girlfriend decided to take us to the coast to cheer me up one day and we stumbled upon this fantastic hotel. It was August 06 and had just been renovated, was given a choice of rooms and shown around each one, all gorgeous and extremely tastefully decorated. Lovely sea view and very spacious... only thing was I couldnt quite understand how the shower worked! Wasn't a deterrent though, as we liked it so much we have booked again to spend our new years eve there :o)

Id highly recommend this hotel, the lady that booked us in and showed us around was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Just stayed at the Belgrave and was very impressed.
The whole building has been re-fitted to a very stylish standard - very clean, modern & hip - particularly for Aber seafront where rooms can be a bit shabby.
It's only a small hotel (about 8 rooms) and has a nice friendly atmosphere. The ensuite was small but that did make the room a good size.
They were quiet so let me have a large double room with seaview at a discount (they don't mind a bit of a haggle if they're quiet).
I had a few hours to kill before going out so I popped out to the off licence nearby and got a bottle of port - lovely to sit looking out to sea (in fact it was very difficult to rouse myself to go out at all).
Waking to the sound of the sea is lovely and there was a fine breakfast.
Even the sash windows worked - very important when the wind is howling all through the night (and other Welsh hymns).
Ty Belgrave is now noticeably better than nearby hotels and is competing more with, say, the Harbourmaster in Aberaeron. I wonder if any of its rivals will pick up the gauntlet.

  • Liked — Trendy decor
  • Disliked — En suite a bit bijou
  • Tips/Secrets — Have a go at haggling. Room 4 is great. Park on the seafront and wave to your car in the morning.
