Didn't really see much of the hotel...difficult enough to find your way around which of course could also be viewed as "exciting". staff were really nice, food (had a buffet as was part of a conference) was really good, beer was good, breakfast was good, rooms were fine, batheroom was a littel cold (cold night anyway). had good free wifi.

Sayed here as part of a car owners club for our AGM. This hotel has hosted our event for many years and we are a widely different and variously demanding v large group of people. The hotel is wonderfully located right next to the Abbey itself and the main building is beautiful with a large annexe. This is a very big hotel indeed but the staff coped wonderfully with vast incomings and outgoings of people. The food at these events is generally fine and so it was again. I don't think it is feasible to achieve the highest culinary levels when you are feeding over 100 people simultaneously but what we had over several nights was perfectly good. The rooms were well appointed and comfortable and quiet.
I think the best thing about this place was the staff, they tried very hard to make us comfortable and I saw some very requests being met with a smile and assistance.

There is always a friendly welcome at the hotel whether we are meeting colleagues for social or business reasons. Our friends say that the rooms are clean and well appointed and reasonably priced. If have not used the restaurant for some time but our colleagues have provided glowing reports of the standards of food and service .

Stayed over night during business trip. Impressive location next to the abbey, overlooking peaceful, traditional Brtisih road. Nice bar and reception area reflecting traditional atmosphere. Rooms are fairly sized and pretty decent, too. And breakfast, good quality with good selection. Yet, few complaints: whereas hot water was plenty in late evening hours, the next morning it never reached my room despite 5 minutes waiting. So, had to shave using cold water! The main electric inlet was probably not properly functioning. Left mobile phone and charger connected entire night, to find out later in the day that it was not charged at all. Let's be fair: perhaps there was an activation/fuse switch that I did not see - but even so, it must have been obscured or poorly marked. So beware of this when you use the power outlets in the room.

Room Tip: Supposedly, rooms in old/original building are more inresting than standard rooms in newer buiding.

Booked weekend through secret escapes, wine and petit fours on arrival, with lovely executive room too. Very reasonable bar and food prices, superb views from our top floor room but rear rooms would have equally good views. Service throughout our stay was first class, a problem with our door was dealt with straight away. Bar and restaurant staff were friendly and efficient - food lovely too. Room was warm with a huge comfy bed, modern bright bathroom. My only v minor gripe is the fixed drawer hairdryer - bring your own. Would return for food, service and views.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views.

The Abbey in itself is a perfectly nice hotel in a lovely location, the main part of the building is a very attractive old building, but the block where the majority of the rooms are is a very ugly 1970s extension. The rooms are nice, quite large with desk, wardrobe, comfy beds, nice bathrooms. The windows really need replacing as they are are single glazed, very old, metal, poor fitting and almost windy when the weather is as inclement as it was when I stayed!

What really let's this hotel down is the staff. The only person I encountered with a smile was the very friendly Welsh cleaner who I met every morning when she was hoovering the bar. The receptionist when I checked in was disinterested, there was not enough staff at breakfast, one poor lad on his own so the wait was ages for anything that wasn't on the buffet (including tea and coffee)

We tried to eat in the restaurant one night but were turned away... at 7pm....from a next to empty restaurant.... and there were only 2 people in our party. The hostess made a right palava out of going to 'ask the chef', 15 mins later we were told we should have pre-booked, and would have to eat in the bar.

Into the bar we go, to wait 20mins to be served, half way through taking our order the barman went and answered the phone and served someone else. The food when it eventually arrived was pretty average, microwave meal stuff.

On check-out I again had to wait ages to be served.

To cope with the hotel at capacity they really need at least more, and ideally better trained staff

A lovely location next to the picturesque Abbey, enhanced by the sound of the Abbey Bells on a Thursday evening and the striking of the clock on the hour! The hotel is reasonably spacious with a variety of rooms in new and old parts of the building which vary in character. On a number of stays I have had rooms varying from 'compact' to large. All rooms were warm, perhaps a bit too warm, and opening windows in rooms on the front lead to disturbance from people and traffic passing at night or early morning. It's not that it's noisy, more that it is generally so quiet that a group of passers by talking loudly makes a big impact! Decor is a little dated, but generally in good repair and clean.
The restaurant is varied (when open, sometimes the menu is served in the bar) the menu is ambitious, at times perhaps too much so. Dishes range from average to good (the Guinea Fowl in particular was excellent, and the Ceasar Salad starter a great take on a classic).
Overall, a good place to stay, friendly staff and reasonable service offering good value.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have nice views of the abbey and the sound of the bells.
