“A peaceful interlude”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

We only stayed one night unfortunately, but it was blissful from the moment we arrived, winding up the drive to the golden Cotswold manor. The welcome was warm and the room, Fountain, large with a sitting room area. I had asked for a twin room and we were given an extra room attached to the main one with it's large comfortable king size, which had twin beds in, perfect if you have a couple of children with you say. The bath was rolltop, there were twin basins and also a powerful shower.
We had champagne on the terrace as we were joined by friends for dinner. The nibbles demand a nobler name, including a foam of potato so light it was ethereal. The amuse bouche was a small square of salmon, unctuous and stuffed with flavour. The starter of lobster, smoked eel and small delicous squares of gazpacho jelly was a feast for the eyes and the tongue, an exquisitely presented still life. the foie gras starter was highly praised, as was the spring chicken main course and the beef fillet with foie gras. Two of us had the lamb, a melting chunk of roasted loin, a neck chop and crumbed slow cooked shoulder which was perfect. Desserts were all tempting, in fact it was a menu where you could happily have eaten any dish at all, quite an achievement. The wine list was extensive, full of unexpected delights whose enjoyment was limited only by the depth of your wallet. The staff were all helpful and charming.
We have resolved to make the birthday there an annual event, butbwe will be back sooner.

Buckland Manor is a Relaix & Chateau member and also a Brown Hotel chain property. My wife and I stayed here four nights in July 2012 and enjoyed it very much. The building, of beautiful golden stone typical of the area, dates from the 1200's, as does the well used varnished flat wooden toilet seat in our bath. I was hoping for an 800 year old souvenir splinter but, alas, it held together.
Our first room, "Vaulted" , at 445 pounds, was a corner room over the dining room, bright and cheerful, with a large sitting area and large bath with a tile stall shower. Our second, at 485 pounds, "Floral", was smaller with a small dark slot sitting room, but larger bath. Both rooms overlooked the beautiful grounds of vast lawns, trees, and flower beds. The long approach to the building is impressive, but spoiled by allowing cars to park directly in front of the entrance.
My manual shift Hertz Kia compact cringed between an Aston- Martin and a Bentley. On our second afternoon, an overnight guest dropped in by helicopter in front of our window. It's that kind of place.
The public rooms are comfortably old fashioned, overseen by dark portraits of 18th century nobility.
The dining room is light and attractive, and the cuisine is excellent, although the menu did not change while we were there. The service was excellent and friendly. The servers were all young Europeans. All diners are well dressed; no jeans, please.
The reception staff are friendly, efficient and helpful, but do not expect to be greeted with an embrace if you arrive in shorts and sandals.
A tennis court is available, but there is no spa, gym or swimming pool.
After our second day, we became aware of an overlying aura of gentile decay. The wallpaper in our bathroom was stained and the curtain edges were torn and frayed. Most of the carpets in the public rooms were threadbare and the ancient wooden dining room tables (no tablecloths) all had water stain rings. This especially surprised us because of the very high reputation of the Brown Hotel in London. Obviously they have overlooked keeping this property up. The gardens, although pleasing, were not as fully planted and lush as the grounds of several other equally ranked hotels nearby.
We enjoyed our stay, but before returning, would try one or more of the nearby competitor up-scale hotels with spas and swimming pools. There are quite a few to choose from.

Buckland Manor gets the "Best Hotel" of our 3 week UK trip from me! I loved this hotel-from the minute we arrived and were greeted by David, who quickly made us feel right at home, to our reluctant departure the next morning after a lovely breakfast. We felt like we were welcomed to a good friend's home and were so well taken care of. Upon check-in, we asked for an upgrade, as we had booked a Classic room. David showed us 2 Superior rooms to choose from-both were beautiful, but we chose Vaulted over Fountain. It was a beautiful room with lots of windows, done in blues and creams. The furnishings were elegant and the ceiling was curved-hence the Vaulted name. The bathroom also had a huge window looking out onto the garden and fountain. Both bedroom and bathroom were huge. We were charged 50 GBP for the upgrade, but it was worth it! We walked the grounds, which were beautiful and manicured with a couple of water features. We felt like we were in another world-it was so quiet and serene. The drawing rooms were elegant, with lots of interesting pictures and books to look at, and the fireplace made them so cozy. It was a little quiet in the house, as there are only 13 rooms. It seemed as if there were 2 other parties staying the night we were. The dinner/restaurant staff seems very young and communication was a small problem-I believe they were Eastern European, but they were so eager to help. Service was great and we really enjoyed the staff. Dinner was delicious, as was the wine. We had a wonderful night's sleep-the bed was so fluffy and comfy-great pillows too! Breakfast was delicious-all cooked to order-no buffet at Buckland! I asked for a scone (which wasn't on the menu) and I was served one! Delicious! I highly recommend a stay at Buckland Manor-wish we had stayed another night.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms are gorgeous!

As far as luxury accommodations and a country estate go, Buckland is about as good as it gets. Be sure to walk outside the manor house, but still on the grounds, to see old cottage homes and get a true feel for the old English estate home.

That being said, Buckland just wasn't my style. The staff was formal to the point of being rigid - I almost felt as if they were trying to recreate the manor house experience by acting as servants. I really enjoyed our room and the grounds, but the stuffy nature of the dining room and formality of simply walking in and out made the experience somewhat sub-par. I won't return to Buckland, but I guess I'm glad I went once.

The grounds and structure at Buckland are beautiful. The accommodations were very nice. However, the staff was extremely formal to the point of being unfriendly, and the food was limited and far from the best we had. I won't return to Buckland.

The house is fantastic and has a wonderful feel especially in the winter with the fires in the main rooms. We has an excellent tea one afternoon and then decided to take up their special offer for a short stay a few weeks later. The meal was very good. We had a slight problem when we weren't warned that there was going to be a day event at the hotel and lots of people arriving which meant that during the day it wasn't a cosy hotel. It won't put us off going back as it is a good base to explore the Cotswolds

Room Tip: The bedrooms are all individually decorated and it's worth selecting the one you like.

In the world, there are a very few places that stand apart from the rest. This is one of them. Not your cookie cutter standard hotel (if you are looking for a Hilton or Marriott - don't stay here), it is a manor house hotel of 13th century heritage - small, eccentric and superb. And I'm actually not going to say much more, in case too many people find out about it and I can't get a room next time I call (they have only 13 in total).

It is a true treasure in the midst of some of the most magnificent countryside and beside one of the most beautiful villages in England. From afternoon tea to a Michelin standard restaurant for lunch and dinner with herbs and vegetables from its own gardens, there are few more relaxing or pleasurable experiences to be found anywhere. If you go, don't forget to say "hello" to Oscar (the hotel's beautiful labrador).
