“A tale of two hotels”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

We arrived on Tuesday 25th February and were met by attentive reception staff and very thoughtful concierge . We quickly settled in and were shown to our room. A sumptuous king size bed and fabulous river view were mingled uncomfortably with coffee splattered plug sockets, holes in carpets and a slightly faded feel of a room that was running out of warm welcomes. We made our way to the bar and snuggled down to our comfortable chairs in front of a roaring, well tended fire and were quickly welcomed by staff that seemed to know exactly what we needed to unwind after our long journey. After being dazzled by the claims of " awarding winning " restaurant, we eagerly sat down, and again, were charmed by the attentive staff who made every effort ........but could not divert our attention enough from the charred steak which would have been passable but for the gristle and fat...ribeye ? Are you sure ? On the plus side we were beyond caring at this point after delving into the wonderful wine selection that the Oakly offers....this also after a beautifully chilled glass of champagne.
I would love to stop here...and award Oakley Court a very handsome score.....but again, as I said, this is a tale of two hotels. After an incredibly busy Wednesday we slopped into the bar in much need our our lovely attentive staff. We were abandoned ! After doing everything except jumping on the furniture and crying in frustration, we eventually were, begrudgingly, served. We sat down.....and watched with despare as our fire was neglected to a point it slowly gave up and with a sad final puff..died.
So as a final point Oakley Court may I say.......our breakfast in the room....no salt and pepper on the tray.......no butter with toast.....orange juice watered down ( we can tell).....and a very meager pot of coffee for two.
My advice to fellow travellers is this.........arrive on the right day..with wonderful thoughtful staff.....and you will be blown away. Stay after the shift change................and it falls apart. ( the concierge today literally watched me struggle with 3 bags alone and never moved to help). As I said....a tale of two hotels.

We stayed at Oakley Court for our anniversary and my birthday following a recommendation from a friend. I was very impressed with the smoothness of booking and pre arrival contact with guest services.
We arrived at Reception and were greeted immediately by a member of the conceirge team who assisted us with our bags, brought us a glass of champagne and then took us to our room. He was friendly and helpful and came out to the lawns later in the afternoon to show us around and tell us a bit about the history of the hotel - a nice touch and he took care not to be intrusive.
The room itself (226) was fantastic. Two large double windows overlooking the river and gardens and a huge, very comfy bed. There was a bottle of champagne and chocolates along with a card from the manager wishing us a nice stay and congratulating us on our anniversary/birthday. It was a personal touch which we appreciated and showed how effective communication between reservations, guest services and management is. Most importantly the bedroom was extremely quiet - we'd left our two little boys at home so relaxation was our aim!
We had pre dinner drinks in the bar - pricey but lovely cocktails, a great atmosphere and very attentive service despite staffing levels seeming quite low.
Dinner was unfortunately a bit of a let down. It's rare for us to eat in a restaurant of this calibre and be disappointed but we were. The staff seemed rushed and knew little about the menu when asked and we felt the restaurant lacked atmosphere. The food was just ok - but we were expecting to be wowed. We decided not to order dessert and took our wine through to the bar and finished it in front of one of the lovely open fires.
We chose to cancel our restaurant reservation for the second night and instead ate in the bar. There was a lovely atmosphere and a table had thoughtfully been reserved in the library section for us which was perfect. We had a great meal with wine, dessert and cocktails and the service was excellent.
Breakfast in the restaurant was good - the usual full english all available and a wide selection of fruit etc which I loved.
Unfortunately the pool had to be closed during our stay so we couldn't try it out - a bit disappointing but these things can't be helped.
Service generally was very good from check in through to housekeeping with perhaps the restaurant not quite at the same level as elsewhere. I'm only sorry I'm not able to mention a couple of staff by name (no name badges!) as they deserved particular praise.
All in all, a great stay in beautiful surroundings - we hope to return!

Dear Sarah B

We are delighted to read that you had a "relaxing stay" and enjoyed your anniversary / birthday celebrations at The Oakley Court. Thank you for your compliments regarding our staff and facilities. I offer my sincere apologies for your disappointing Restaurant experience – we will carefully review your feedback with the Restaurant Manager and Chef as it is our intention to exceed our guest expectations in all areas.

We appreciate your understanding regarding the pool closure - this situation was unforeseen and due to circumstances beyond our immediate control. We are pleased to report that the pool is now in full service.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to The Oakley Court in the near future.

We arrived to a pleasant greeting in the main building with a glass of something fizzy. The main buildings are wonderful and very stately. However the room that we had was a huge let down in comparison. For the amount of money that we paid, I really expected the smaller details (such as a decent hair dryer, soft bathrobes and towels or a more up to date bathroom suite). The grounds provided a lovely walk and I am sure it will be lovely to sit in the sunshine over the summer. Yet we found the prices in the bar/lounge extremely over priced for what it actually was. We had a lovely weekend out in Windsor and Maidenhead whilst also enjoying an amazing curry at The Empire of India (about 5 minutes down the road if you turn right)

It was a lovely break, but for me it was just too overpriced. We had already spent a lot of money to go away, and having to pay extra (or not to have quality extras) was for me, too excessive.

Dear NicR

Thank you for staying at The Oakley Court. I am concerned to read of your disappointment. We have two hairdryers in each room; one in the bathroom and a second placed within the drawers and our bath robes and towels are of a high quality. Our bar prices are regularly monitored and in line with other 4* hotels in the area. It is pleasing to note that you enjoyed other aspects of your stay and thank you for your valued feedback.

My wife and I stayed at Oakley for one night for out tenth year anniversary. The hotel upgraded us to a junior suite in the mansion overlooking the river and awaiting us in the room was a bottle of Proscetto and some delicious chocolate. The concierge took our suitcase up for us which was most helpful as the hotel has no lift. The door to the room was colossal and we really felt as though we were in a 19th century mansion The room was large and well equipped with every amenity you could hope for, and the view of the river from the window was wonderful.
We took afternoon tea in the conservatory. This was my favourite room as it was really bright and it overlooked the river. Next door, was a sitting room complete with real wood-burning fires. We also enjoyed sitting in this room as this also had a river –view and was really quiet. There was an assortment of comfortable sofas and chairs to choose from as well as two extremely well-padded window seats upon which one could perch and gaze out at the river. The other guests all spoke in quiet voices which made for a most tranquil experience, apart from early Saturday evening when a group of young people assembled there before a dinner party in the next room. These people started laughing and talking really loudly and did not seem to be aware that they had destroyed the serene atmosphere around them. Still – that wasn’t the hotel’s fault as there was a bar area and another adjacent room where the younger people could have sat in if they wanted to be noisy!
We ate dinner in the restaurant and really enjoyed the restful, romantic atmosphere. Before that, I enjoyed thrashing my wife at a game of snooker and pool in the dedicated billiards room. Unfortunately, the pool area was closed due to a temporary fault, but it did look very well equipped with a pool, Jacuzzi and sauna.
We slept well in our comfortable bed and at breakfast the next day, we were greeted with an enthusiastic “good morning” from the member of staff in charge of the breakfast. In fact, every member of staff that we encountered always smiled and greeted us and generally made us feel like royalty. There was a good variety of cooked and continental fare to choose from – a shame that porridge wasn’t available, but then, I am very fussy.
After breakfast, as we had done the afternoon before, we went out walking besides the river which was immediately outside the main building (200 yards away). We were impressed to discover that the queen had visited in 2009 to assist in the swanupping. There weren’t many ducks or swans around, but then the river current was extremely fast and one duck seemed to enjoy whizzing “freestyle “down the river without having to swim, and then flying back to have another go. Near the river was the walled garden and tennis courts and if I would have had my racquet, I would have enjoyed thrashing my wife at tennis, too.
All in all, we had an enchanting experience at Oakley Court and we would love to come and enjoy another stay at this grand hotel.

Room Tip: Try and get a suite in the main house (Ours was room 102.)

Our two night stay with the family at this hotel was the highlight of our UK holiday. It was like stepping into a movie, and in fact, the Rocky Horror Show had been filmed there....

We stayed in the modern rooms in the separate adjoining buildings, which where confortable and large. However, the main building is the main attraction, with its stunning architecture, and characteristic interior decoration.

The gardens are wonderful, and in the summer it is great to have lunch or dinner out on the garden terrace.

The hotel and its gardens are right on the river, and you can rent river boats right there. Make sure to ask the hotel to prepare a take away picnic basket for you....

There is a country club on the premises, and as a guest you can enjoy a game of golf or tennis. There is also a small gym, and a pool. Great if you bring kids.

The hotel is located a bit outside Windsor, but it would only take you 5-10 minutes to get to the city center. Also very practical for Heathrow or Lego Land.

If we were to find something to put the finger on, perhaps it is the breakfast buffet. We came a bit late (09:30), and suffered the fact that they were slow to refull the buffet. Also, the waiters who atended our table took ages to bring us coffee and tea, but we attribute this to the fact that the breakfast room was very. The staff at the reception were very efficient and friendly.

Impressive and helpful check in staff and concierge, long meandering walk up and down stairs to east wing room overlooking flooded Thames. Lovely comfy big bed, plenty of storage room. As I've seen on other comments bathroom lighting not too good and towel rail was not working so bathroom was cold, only downside. Evening meal lovely, although slightly expensive, but the good thing was we ordered a £23 bottle of wine but was charged for £49 bottlr, this was immediately sorted and price revised to what we'd wanted, the restaurant manager who'd served us the wine actually followed us into lounge to apologise profusely for mistake,v impressed. Hubbie slept well both nights (ttpical!) but because of high winds and rain outside I didn't sleep so well! Beautiful wooden animal ornaments in outside areas. 2min walk from room we were on edge of overflowing Thames, watching swans swimming around, their legs must have been moving really fast under the water! Breakfast was normal hotel standard,continental/english,variety good but as we didn't go to Brekkie til gone 9 it wasn't too warm but gave good start to day. Would love to go back on hot summers day as I'm sure outside areas would be absolutely lovely! Thinking about it though now,not sure it was worth £169 per night, sorry

Friendly staff, lovely setting relaxed and oh so English.

Shabby Chic cups and saucers all quite retro, endless tea and coffee.

Delicate sandwiches and scrumptious scones with oodles of clotted cream and jam, that's only the first two tiers, top tier full of sponge, carrot cake and raspberry torte too much for one so they pop it in a box to take home for later.

We were good but there is the option of a glass of bubbly next time I think.

A great treat take your Mum she will love it.

Room Tip: When you book as for the window seat the you can look over the gardens.
