Description: At some time in the sixteenth century, a small timber-framed building existed on this site. It was likely to have previously been a medieval market stall, or even a shop. Deeds from the fourteenth century show a mix of tenements, market stalls and shops in the area. The current Horse & Groom was originally known as the lower Rose & Crown. From the records at the Licensed Victuallers' Association, the first licensee was listed in 1719. It is more likely, however, that the pub was there much earlier, but no records exist to prove it. The first licensee was one Peter Tillier, who was the tenant for two years. A17th century Old Traditional pub outside the gates of Windsor castle In 1769, the lower Rose & Crown was sold to a Henry Reddington for 271 pounds and 17 shillings. When the name was changed to the Horse and Groom in 1792, the recorded licensee was Richard Knight. At this point, the property was in the ownership of one William Foster, a Windsor brewer. The mortgage of £250 at that time was made to a James Dauncey. In 1837 the pub was sold to Neville & Reid as part of the Windsor Brewery Estate.

“Tasty, reasonably priced, convenient for Windsor Castle visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

The turkey & Mushroom pie I had here was the best I had during my November visit to the UK. I kept hoping to relive the experience elsewhere, but this pie was simply the best. Just across the way from Windsor Castle, so it was a perfect stop before sightseeing. The waitstaff was friendly considering how busy they were. I've been to other restaurants near the castle in years past that were very sub par compared to the Horse & Groom.

“don't go near this place”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

where do you start!
a pub with no beers on tap! apparantly the beer needed to settle which speaks to very poor cellar managment. a beef and ale pie-reminiscent of school dinners; vaguely beef flavoured chewing gum and a soggy pastry case-I like my veg al dente but these were frankly uncooked and cold-chips were OK but undoubtedly frozen -unfriendly staff who clearly couldnt give a damn. i suppose they dont need to try given that they are opposite the gate to the castle but it is because they are in such a good spot that they need to as it is food like this that gives this country a poor reputation for food generally.

Great spot for fish & chips and a cold beer! Down to earth old English pub.
The Queen soundtrack added to the lunch.

“Great place for lunch or a drink while in town.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

This is a 'must stop' on any night out in Windsor, and indeed a great destination in its own right.
Food is good pub standard and not silly money, and on Thursdays they have live music.
Situated opposite the Castle is a plus on a Summer's evening while drinking outside, and Winter has the attraction of a roaring fire.
Good pub. Not many left.

“Trip to Windsor Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

Enjoy the English pub dining style at this establishment near the royal palace in Windsor. The food is very good and prepared promptly. The staff was helpful and answered question about the pub and locale. A very old building, all the seating arrangements are very close and makes for an interesting meal. Chat with your neighbors at the next table and enjoy the setting.

I would recommend this pub to anyone traveling to Windsor.
