Description: At some time in the sixteenth century, a small timber-framed building existed on this site. It was likely to have previously been a medieval market stall, or even a shop. Deeds from the fourteenth century show a mix of tenements, market stalls and shops in the area. The current Horse & Groom was originally known as the lower Rose & Crown. From the records at the Licensed Victuallers' Association, the first licensee was listed in 1719. It is more likely, however, that the pub was there much earlier, but no records exist to prove it. The first licensee was one Peter Tillier, who was the tenant for two years. A17th century Old Traditional pub outside the gates of Windsor castle In 1769, the lower Rose & Crown was sold to a Henry Reddington for 271 pounds and 17 shillings. When the name was changed to the Horse and Groom in 1792, the recorded licensee was Richard Knight. At this point, the property was in the ownership of one William Foster, a Windsor brewer. The mortgage of £250 at that time was made to a James Dauncey. In 1837 the pub was sold to Neville & Reid as part of the Windsor Brewery Estate.

We had dinner at the Horse and Groom after a day in Windsor. The pub is on Castle Hill, just across Windsor Castle. The pub is really small but it's nice with a traditional english atmosphere !! The service was prompy and the food was very good !!! Price reasonable !

This is right across from Windsor Castle so I would say it's the location that's really nice, other than that, nothing too special about it. It's very small so it cannot hold a lot of people.

Popped in for lunch before going to the castle. Outside it looked attractive and the" olde world appearence" inside would certainly impress the tourists but then it goes downhill. Sandwiches were very uninspiring - packet ham between 2 chunks of bread. Chips were good but we left feeling we had been had.

We went into the Horse and Groom just after our tour of Windsor castle. (Its literally across the street from there) The place is really small and probably couldnt hold more then 30 people but it does have a nice atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the food was decent. I had the breaded scampi and it cost 6.75 so it was relatively cheap and cheerful. Also tried the ale Knight of Garter which was ok.

It's fine. Food was good. Music was terrible - rap and punk rock - and played very loudly. They were out of the beer we wanted which was a disappointment. I wouldn't choose it again but the food was good.
