“Overnight stay solo traveller”
Reviewed May 17, 2012

Great location but watch the morning traffic - it is pretty heavy with both routes to the M4 slow going. Hotel was easy to find and on balance I was best pleased. Some of the reviews were a bit rough and probably for good reason because the nicest rooms overlook the Thames so it may be worth booking direct to ensure you get what you want. I had an upgrade to room 105 which overlooked the beer garden and the river and was very well appointed, clean, spacious and comfortable - there really was nothing to complain about - had a great night’s sleep in a massive bed (perfect for playing my favourite game of "starfish n' snore") - staff helpful and efficient - overall very good and a nice hotel bar with good selection of beers etc. Continental Breakfast served its purpose or you can upgrade to full English. - BUT for all the internal upgrades the owners must seriously consider replacing the old sash windows - they didn't shut properly or open even and potentially you could have a bad experience from noise (beer garden / street / car park etc.) and also quite draughty. For me no problem on the night but it's easy to see where it could go so badly wrong. I didn't notice any lifts so for less able travellers some of the rooms may be a problem? Overall very nice indeed - probably make a great weekend getaway too, the walks along the river looked really nice - 10 mins walk to the centre of town.

Room Tip: Make sure you have an upgraded room that is quiet and river views.

Dear Valued Guest,

I would just like to say thank you for your feedback,
We have taken your comments on board regarding replacing the windows, Our windows are only able to open to a certain extent due to health and safety reasons but I have asked maintenance to check the windows in room 105 to see if everything is in working order.

Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind Regards

This hotel was ideally placed for Bray (Wateside / Fat Duck / Hinds Head) which is what we wanted. The building is quite old - the stairs creak and you can hear people walking about in the room above you. Some of the public areas are tired and dated but generally it seemed clean enough. Unfortunately I was servied a drink in a dirty glass (which was changed) and my husband had to return his pint of lager as it was almost completely flat! I was charged 3 different prices for the same pint (on the same day!) so we didn`t expect too much after that (our first day) so we were disappointed.
The room was clean, a good size and looked out over the river. The bathroom was also clean but I would say there wasn`t enough shelf space in there - we ended up stacking our toiletries on the table in the bedroom. The "sample sized! shower gel is enough for 2 for 1 day if used sparingly, and the loo papaer was the roughest we have had!
Breakfast was ok (same every day) and on our 3rd day we asked to have Eggs Benedict from the menu which is provided for non residents and were told we would have to pay extra for it even though it was priced at less than the full English that was included in our room rate! We were annoyed at that - why should there be a better breakfast selection for non residents that residents can`t order?
If you have a room near the back (as we did overlooking the river) be aware there is a beer garden below the rooms which can get busy with non residents and therefore noisy so if it is warm and you want to sleep with the window open, there will be a pay-off!
The staff were friendly enough - none of them english, which was a shame, but they seemed to work hard and do a good job.
We probably wouldn`t stay here again, but would pay a bit more for a better hotel.

Room Tip: Room 208 was ok - decent size with good river view and not ground floor

We needed somewhere near to the Hinds Head in Bray (see my review). Staff are young, mainly foreign nationals but work hard and are very pleasant. Rooms (choose at the back) are modern, compact but contain all you need - including full size ironing board, firm mattress, large TV, tea/coffee facilities. This is quite an old property so there is no lift and lots of floors creak but it was never a problem. What you do not see is any sign of a managing presence - in the circumstances every thing went smoothly and, considering the busy area, we could still park and had a reasonable nights sleep. Plus points for the spacious dining area, relaxed breakfast and views over the river.

Room Tip: There is an overflow car park.

We stayed here for one night as we were heading into London for my hubby's 30th birthday. The hotel is in a lovely position overlooking the Thames & the room we had (104) was decorated very nicely with a great bed & lots of space.
Overall a nice stay but a few negatives...
When we arrived the car park was packed so we had to park down a different street then keep checking for spaces. Our room was a river view but was obscured by the fire stairs. We were on the ground floor so when we arrived at 2.30pm the garden was full of people which I understand on a sunny day by a river however I think some kind of net curtains or blinds are needed so you have some privacy otherwise everyone can see you. On the Sunday morning we were woken at 7.20am by loud music which sounded like it was coming from the breakfast/restaurant room below us, so presumably staff setting up, not impressed as we'd wanted a lie in! I did mention it to reception on check out. I'm sure if you had a room higher up all of the above wouldn't exist & overall a nice stay.

Great positioned hotel directly on the river, with ample parking. Very friendly staff and lovely clean hotel. Breakfast was reasonably priced. We went as a couple but I can imagine the surrounding area would be good for a family holiday.

Room Tip: Imagine a river view would be good. We had no choice as there was only one room left!.

We've stayed here three times now - purely for convenience and a view of the river. But the service, particularly in the restaurant, lets it down every time.

As said in another review the stairs to the room are hard work, especially if coming up from the basement restaurant and the windows are filthy.

Food in the restaurant is mediocre and during our meal for four one main course was wrong and three of us had ours and the fourth person had to wait. We were told there would be no charge for that meal. The menu described the sea bass as having cherry or vine tomatoes (or similar) but they were chopped mushy tomatoes in the middle of the fish. Our chocolate fondue dessert came without heat, without marshmallows, and without sticks . . . we had no chance of catching a waiter's eye, so ate the fondue, and when querying the absence of heat, had a very poor response when we mentioned it - as in "Well, we haven't charge you for his meal!" Later the waitress glowered as I passed on my way to the bar.

Stayed here as part of our walking of the Thames Path and having walked past it earlier in the day we though it looked in need of a bit of TLC. Once in though everything was good, apart from a bit of a maze of stairs to our room. The bar seemed very busy when we arrived but we had already eaten and having an early night we did not notice any noise.

Noce comfy bed and big bathroom made for an enjoyable stay (just touch up the paint outside please)

Ideal place for us as we always try to stay on the river when we can and looking out in the morning while eating breakfast was a very pleasant experience.
