Description: Built around 1480, The Thatched Tavern was originally a farmhouse with a croft (a small farm). There was also a Blacksmiths forge at the back of the building where the kitchen hatch is now, and a wood store at the end of the bar.During the reign of Queen Anne (1701) Cheapside and the surrounding area became recognised as a fashionable place to be seen. The Royal Races on Ascot Heath (as it was then known) also began, although a bit sporadicallyThe Thatched Tavern only became a pub, or tap house as it was known then, in about 1760; it was one of the three most popular drinking establishments in the hamlet of Cheapside. In the early 1900’s it became the main drinking centre in Cheapside, known as ‘The Old Thatch’ The Landlord at this time used to sell local medicine used to cure most ills, consisting of 2 penn’orth of rum and 4 penn’orth of a secret mixture known as warmit! The Tavern has been owned and is loved by many. Some of our locals have been coming here for over 50 years!

Went on an evening an sat on the terrace - all rather pleasant

Drinks came, not a great start with a flat pint of Becks but rectified promptly

Starters were nice but warm not hot . Good size starter portions.

Mains somewhat slow to be received. Mixed reviews - good lamb however mash was pretty dire either re-heated or left too long on the pass. Veal told served pink was certainly not pink. The bacon accompaniment was somewhat service station esque absolutely vile! The triple cooked chips were were luke warm and more like quadruple cooked almost burnt.

Customer service on the whole was good however not a great response from the chap when at paying the bill and the veal was brought up the response of "oh you should have said!" Well a check back on the meal would have helped!

Hopefully things improve

A delightful pub/restaurant set off the beaten track. It is as pretty as a post card but do mind your head with all those low beams. An original setting, not spoilt in any way and very comfortable with a warm welcome. The menu is not over stretched and the quality of the food is excellent. The prices are fair and related to good value..

The best lamb I have ever tasted. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were very attentive to our group of 4. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The only negative I could see was very limited parking. However the Thatched Tavern is definitely worth a visit or two ... or three .... Most enjoyable evening and I am sure no future lamb dish will match the one that this restaurant serves. So tender it just melts in your mouth and the flavour is lovely. The rest of the dishes at the table were also of a very high standard. My compliments to the chef!

We visited the Thatched Tavern on a beautiful summers day last year and had a wonderful meal out in the garden, so when the sun finally decided to make an appearance this year we thought we would go back for lunch. As it was mid week it was quite quiet and there was only one other couple in the garden. We had to go in and collect the menus ourselves and waited a while to place our order. Our starters and drinks arrived promptly and the Kir Royal was delicious but the starter was quite average. We then had quite a long wait for our main course of mussels The triple cooked chips that had been advertised on the menu failed to appear and the accompanying roll was basic. The sauce was rather tasteless and the mussels were gritty. We had to go inside ourselves to re order drinks and had to chase for the bill. We wont be rushing back on the next sunny day.
