Description: Built around 1480, The Thatched Tavern was originally a farmhouse with a croft (a small farm). There was also a Blacksmiths forge at the back of the building where the kitchen hatch is now, and a wood store at the end of the bar.During the reign of Queen Anne (1701) Cheapside and the surrounding area became recognised as a fashionable place to be seen. The Royal Races on Ascot Heath (as it was then known) also began, although a bit sporadicallyThe Thatched Tavern only became a pub, or tap house as it was known then, in about 1760; it was one of the three most popular drinking establishments in the hamlet of Cheapside. In the early 1900’s it became the main drinking centre in Cheapside, known as ‘The Old Thatch’ The Landlord at this time used to sell local medicine used to cure most ills, consisting of 2 penn’orth of rum and 4 penn’orth of a secret mixture known as warmit! The Tavern has been owned and is loved by many. Some of our locals have been coming here for over 50 years!

On a recommendation from a friend, I recently visited this wonderful restaurant on the outskirts of Ascot and was delighted by the whole experience. Starting with a very warm welcome and an excellent choice of beverages which can be enjoyed along with the charming character of the inside of the building or outside in the pleasant and comfortable garden. The main restaurant generates a gentle but alluring atmosphere as guests enjoy the wonderfully selected and perfectly executed dishes that are on offer. Of course there are some excellent wines to choose from to. Thoroughly recommend this place if you are ever in the vicinity.

“A real and true gem of a place!”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

This is a beautiful old world pub with a wonderful modern restaurant serving fabulous food.
The staff are mega friendly, nothing is too much trouble, and dining is inside or outside, great both in the summer and winter.
Very near Windsor great park if you can tear yourself away from the friendly atmosphere for a walk after lunch.
Try it.......you will find it great value, and very friendly

“Highly recommended”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

We went to the Thatched Tavern for dinner and enjoyed pre dinner drinks in the garden at the back - very pretty and quaint , well laid out with trimmed hedges. A lovely setting. The staff were fantastic, especially Natasha who made sure that we were well taken care of. The restaurant is cosy and welcoming and the food is delicious. Will definitely visit again.

“Very tasty food-lots of nice little touches”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

We ate out in the lovely gardens at the back of the pub. Friendly service and the food had some nice touches; we enjoyed the stuffed squid with chorizo and the seafood pie special came with a lovely pea soup concoction, which was great. No eating places are really cheap around Ascot, but the food really shone through and certainly worth trying. I'd like to see some set value menus which I could try on a frequent basis, otherwise it's going to be c£60 for 2 for 2 courses with a drink, which is a bit too steep for me on a regular basis.

“Unhealthy Menu!”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

8 of us booked the restaurant for a son's birthday dinner. The staff were extremely friendly. The menu arrives on blackboards which in the dim light are really difficult to read and much to pretentious!
We all ordered different things of the menu and the specials board. Breast of chicken with dauphinoise potatoes and chorizo and lentil type sauce. So salty I couldn't eat anything other than the meat. Fillet of lamb - so fatty hardly any meat and so salty again. chicken and gnocchi - the chicken was undercooked and the pasta hugely overcooked. hake with prawns - so overcooked and dry not nice. They took the chicken dish away and returned with equally overcooked pasta minus the chicken. Very apologetic staff couldn't understand why we were complaining whilst other people were happily munching on! Perhaps we are used to good food well seasoned and cooked. We refused to pay for the food and just settled a bar tab of £85!
Shame really as a great pub with lovely garden and al fresco dining too.
