“Surprised. July 2012”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

We've stayed at Sarum Heights on the 27th of July.

Because we arrived the same day in Salisbury and did not book in advance we went to the Tourist Information to find a place to stay. The lady at the information office found us Sarum Heights and agreed with the owner the price of 70 pounds for 2 adults and our 20 month's old 'baby'.

The welcome was ok. We got some explanation about the room and the area but also got the feeling it is better not to arrive before 4pm (we arrived at 3.30pm).

The room was comfortable and very clean (just as the rest of the house). The breakfast was good.

Unfortunately we got the last room in the back of the house so not one with the great views in the front, not a very big one and the bath room was only accessible by passing the common corridor for which it was better not to lock the door of the room... This is not meant as a negative comment but just to mention that 70 pounds seems a rather correct price.

We were ready to say goodbye and wanted to pay. To my surprise the owner suddenly tried to charge us an extra 15 pounds because he told us that a 20 month old child is not a 'baby' but a 'toddler'. Being Belgian and English not being my native language i've looked it up... Indeed : "A toddler is a term used to describe a child that is typically defined as being between the ages of one and three." Nice to know now that our daughter is now a toddler.

Let me notice that the age of our daughter was clearly mentionned by the tourist office on the telephone, that the price was agreed and printed on a paper. That the paper was handed over and read by the owner after the owner saw our daughter running and before we entered the room.

I found the fact and the rather arrogant way of asking an extra 15 pounds ("by the way do you know your child is not a baby but a toddler... i want to charge you extra"...) very offending and it surprised me as also tonight the more than excellent reviews surprise me a little.

Apart from that... I wish you all the best.
Greetings, Karel, Elke, Nina.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you feel aggrieved but we feel that you have misunderstood our comments. We were simply saying as you were leaving, that we do normally charge £5.00 for a child of your daughter's age and £15.00 for an older child sharing the parents bedroom. We had no intention of asking you to pay more money as the price had already been agreed with the Tourist information Centre, however they did advise us when booking on your behalf, that you had a 'small baby' and in such cases we do not charge. In practice a 'small baby ' is one that would not sit independantly at the table and eat a breakfast as your daughter did. We would refer to a child that can do so as a 'toddler' and visitors booking directly with us rather than through a 3rd party would have been advised of this beforehand and the appropriate amount would have been charged.

Our check in time is between 4 and 8pm. This is because not only does it give us time to ensure that the rooms are thoroughly cleaned and ready for occupancy, but it also gives us the oppurtunity to do our shopping, gardening and all the other things necessary to run the B&B which is also our own family's home. We do our utmost to assist any guests wishing to arrive outside these times but understandably we do require prior notice.

We recently stayed at Sarum Heights for my 60th birthday. It was only for a weekend but it was just like going home. We were treated just like part of the family.Beautiful bedrooms with tea and coffee facilities and cable TV. Breakfast was superb fresh eggs from their own chickens and marmalade and jam all home made. Absolutely delicious. Plus a selection or a full English. The family were so hospitable giving us valuable information about travel to and from the city. Vital information on where to eat and popular visitor attractions that should not be missed. Thank you so much Sue and Charles for making my birthday treat so enjoyable. We are already looking forward to seeing you again. Christine and Philip Slater.

Room Tip: Beautiful views from our bedroom windows, lovely shower, and beautiful clean bedding and decor. Nothi...

We have stayed with the very accomodating and friendly Sue and Charlie numerous times now over the last few months and would highly recommend the service they offer. Rooms are extremely clean, very comfortable and beautifully decorated. The view is fantastic and the location accessible. Breakfast includes freshly laid eggs with your full english , homemade bread and preserves. What's not to like :)

I recently stayed at Sarum Heights when visiting the area for a wedding. We had a considerable drive to get there and so it was pleasing to be greeted warmly. On our first night we were offered directions into the city to get dinner and asked what we would like for breakfast and at what time we would like it.

The rooms are clean and spacious, whilst some of the decor is a little dated it certainly does not detract from the value of the accommodation. We stayed in a double room, which came complete with a TV and freeview, plus a small en-suite bathroom.

I found the owners to be friendly and knowledgeable regarding the surrounding areas and best routes to use when driving.

The have chicken and so offer fresh eggs, as well as making their own jams and marmalades and also baking fresh bread.

All in all I was very satisfied and would certainly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

We had a lovely stay at Anne and Ash's B&B in Salisbury. The B&B is situated perfectly, just outside the city and right across Old Sarum, which we had a view on from our twin room. We had a lovely evening walk around it. The house is next to a city road with minor traffic, which didn't disturb us. The room was really nice and clean. Anne and Ash are great hosts that make you feel right at home in their house and serve a beautiful fresh breakfast. Love to visit again.

We chose Sarum Heights on the recommendations of previous fabulous reviews. We were not disappointed and agree what a PERFECT choice this is.

We were welcomed into a lovely cosy family home and shown to our well appointed, stylish, light and airy room at the front of the house. The view of Old Sarum, from the elevated position is stunning, especially at sunset. The room is immaculately clean throughout, with a well stocked and regularly replenished tea/coffee tray. The en-suite shower room had a powerful shower, white fluffy towels aplenty and even a lovely basket of complimentary shower products. On the landing there is a library of books, games, dvds and a hairdryer for guest use. We loved that we could park our car off-road. This meant we could walk into Salisbury (or catch the bus outside) and not worry about parking or charges etc. Sue told us of a lovely walk along the river and into the town centre. Evening meals are a short stroll up the hill to a Harvester pub selling good food at reasonable prices. Talking of food - everyone mentions the breakfasts. Excellent choices of breakfasts, from yoghurts and cereals to freshly cooked traditional English (with eggs from the lovely hens residing at the top of the garden). We are usually quiet, but found ourselves chatting away with Sue and Charlie as if they were old friends, a testament to their charm and warmth as hosts. Sue found out contact numbers for us, was helpful in planning our visits to surrounding places of interest, ie the medievel city itself with cathedral, Old Sarum, Stonehenge and Woodhenge, the Great Bustard breeding programme and so on. This is a lovely area of countryside to visit, which we thoroughly enjoyed but what we will also take away with us, is a happy memory of the time spent in Sarum Heights and the enjoyment of making new friends. Thankyou Charlie and Sue, and of course, the chickens!

Room Tip: We stayed in a double room at the front of the house which has views over the countryside and Old Sa...
