First, the downs:
The parking is a five minute walk away in a public car park - £6.50 a day, £1.50 on Sunday and the hotel, like Wetherspoons in general these days is a bit careworn.
The Ups?
The staff were excellent; friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and it is situated right at the edge of the city center, about 5 mins walk from the cathedral. We booked online and stayed for three nights, Friday to Monday for £128.
Would definitely recommend it.

We were warned that the music could be noisy till 1 am, but we didn't hear anything. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Receptionist was very welcomming. So can't fault the accommodation, it is a 3 star hotel.
As for breakfast, or dinner i would eat elswhere. Its cheap but thats all. The service was terrible the plates were cold. And people are having pints with there breakfast at 9am on a sunday morning!

The hotel is by the river in the centre of the town, about 10 minutes from the Cathedral. Car parking is about 10 minutes walk away, in the pay-and-display (works from 08:00 to 18:00 daily, free overnight). We arrived Friday evening, and paid for an hour ont he road (receptionist was shocked at the £1-50 charge!) and advised to use the long-stay behind Sainsbury's and pay for all day as was cheaper, even if you move the car the next day and return later the same day. Room was on top floor, overlooking the street. Clean bathroom, plenty of towels and hot-water. Bed was comfortable although it did creak a little; TV remote not working, but not a problem to us. Plenty of tea and coffee things.

The hotel is above a Lloyd's No 1 bar - this means party central on Thursday to Saturday nights (the bar has loud muic and is open until 1:00 a.m.). Although we did hear the music, it was not overly intrusive, and we had no probloems sleeping at all.

Food in the pub is reasonable - it's not gourmet dining, but is good value for money; watch out for the breakfasts though, as tea is extra, and cranks the price up a little.

Easy walk into town for the shops / restaurants / pubs tourist sites.

Would stay here again, and would also consider other Weatherspoon-chain hotels.

Booked 2 rooms through Laterooms.com at the last minute. Told then we would arrive about 8PM. Arrived at 750 PM. Rang the bell for the receptionist..no answer. Called the hotel reception desk...no answer. Went to the bar (this is a Wetherspoon property) and asked at the bar for help. Was told to ring the bell....at that point a guest of the hotel used his keycard to let me in and I took the lift to the 1st floor to the reception desk. NO one present.....I called Laterooms for help. They could not do anything except offer to find me another room. But I would have to argue with King's Head for a refund. About 820 PM the receptionist showed up and informed me she was "on her break at the pub". I am all for workers taking a break, but there was no indication of where she was or when she would come back. And the pub was not helpful either. No real apology or attempt to soothe the tired family that expected a welcome.
The car park was 1/4 mile away. So my husband, who had been waiting on the street in the car unloaded bags and moved the car. The beds were clean, and the party outside our window lasted until the wee hours. I am an early riser, so I got a shower the next morning. The hot water went out, so my family did not. Hot water came back on at 1100, just as we were leaving. The hotel did offer to let us stay to take showers, but we had bags in the car by then.
Nonexistent service, nonhelpful staff. Never again.

Stayed for one night (Sat) but despite asking for a quiet room when booking, ended up overlooking the main street which is noisy 'till all hours and then woken up by the road sweeper at 7.15 This hotel has no double glazing and when I enquired on arrival with the recepionist if they had a quiet room was told "we don't have any quiet rooms in this hotel" Location is great and drinks are cheap in the bar below for teenagers with passports and driving licenses being shown at the bar

Salisbury - what a lovely place! Just got back from a weekend away to see Salisbury and visit Longleat. The King's Head is great value and in the best location right in the town centre on the river. We had a room for three at the top of the hotel overlooking the river, very pretty. The beds were very comfortable and we had everything we needed. There was no shower because of the shape of the bathroom in the eves but it didn't really matter as there was masses of hot water for baths. The staff were very helpful and friendly, it was all very easy. The food is fantastic value and delicious. Yes, it can be noisy at night - it is a pub in the city centre, after all - but it didn't keep us awake. if you want complete quiet, don't stay in a pub! Next time we go away we'll be looking for other Wetherspoon hotels for unbeatable value.

Arrived at the hotel to find 2 teenage girls no older than 20 checking us in, which was fine. But when we got to our room it was a double room rather than the twin which we had booked. We phoned reception and explained that we were 2 lads and were not that way enclined. We were then told very abruptly that all the twin rooms were taken and there was nothing they could do.
After pleading, then threatening to book another room online we was then told a spare Z bed was available and we could move to a bigger room with that in it. We came down to reception to wait for the room and noticed the news paper on the table which I began to read. The receptions we had spoken to about the room then walked past reception and noticed me reading the newspaper. She Said " have you paid for that newspaper. If not then put it back ''. As we couldn't read the newspapers without paying we started talking to the other slightly nicer receptionist. She told us that they couldn't wait to finish as they were goin on a big night out in the town. This I suspect is why it was to much trouble to move us in the first place, as they wanted to get ready.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The site of this Wetherspoon pub has been occupied by an inn since the 15th century. By c1520, it was known as the King's Head, and it retained that name until it was rebuilt in the 1880s. The County Hotel was, itself, a change of name some time during the 1880s or 1890s. Before then, it was the Kings Head and Brewery. We have 33 individual bedrooms. All of our rooms are en suite and include tea- and coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, a hair dryer, TV and free Wi-Fi, also available in the pub. Please be aware that we are a Lloyds No 1 bar so we will be playing music in the pub from Thursday to Saturday nights. Limited quiet rooms are available so please telephone in advance to request one. We have no onsite parking but there is a city centre car park we recommend that is only a 3-5 minute walk away. You are able to stop on the pub entrance to unload your luggage before you go and park. ... more   less
