Dropped in here as it was on the way home and wanted to stretch my legs, free parking which was a good start, spacious area with lots of people out with there dogs and children, access to the actual castle was very reasonably priced with optional guide books also reasonaly priced, lots of kids about with activity sheets all seemingly having a good time, plenty of information boards about to explain about different parts of the castle with relevent dates and historical characters etc, fantastic views all round the castle and had a pleasant hour or so.
I think you really need a nice day for a visit, because even though the day I visited was quite nice it was quite blowy and was a bit cold in the wind.
Bring your kids for fun and education a winner for everyone

While touring the area, we stopped here after visiting the cathedral in Salisbury. It was so pastoral after the crowds at the cathedral, and a great place to reflect on how history changes the fate of places over time. This was the center of Salisbury until they cathedral was built, then it was abandoned.

While it is mostly foundations, there is plenty to see. You walk a bridge over an old moat (dry when we visited), and the views from the high points are amazing. Well worth the time, and having a guide along to explain it (Alan Price with Celtic Horizons) was a big plus.

One of my favourite walks in Salibury.
The lower reaches of the site are free and the views are great.

A very relaxed place to visit, at the top in the middle you have the ruins of Old Salisbury, surrounding it entirely it has two dry deep moats as the defenses, these are fun for the children to climb up and down, also at the top there is a wonderful view of New Salisbury and the surrounding villages, you can see for miles, good place for picnics
