“Very Old Saram”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

A very relaxed place to visit, at the top in the middle you have the ruins of Old Salisbury, surrounding it entirely it has two dry deep moats as the defenses, these are fun for the children to climb up and down, also at the top there is a wonderful view of New Salisbury and the surrounding villages, you can see for miles, good place for picnics

“Mind boggling”

Fascinating glimpse into the past, and a lovely walk around the boubdaries of the site. Not a place to be in the rain however - we were lucky as the sun was shining and the views were great.

“Out with the Old”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Great site operated by English Heritage with good interpretation. Have visited many times over the years. Commanding view over the surrounding country and New Sarum (Salisbury) which took over.

“Great Views”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

If you visit Stonehenge, you should visit Old Sarum. There's no fancy audio guide, but the informative boards around the site, and perhaps a bit of reading beforehand make it a very interesting visit. It's never too crowded, and the views are wonderful. Definitely worth a visit. My wife and I have been here several times and send any of our visitors there as well.

If you don't want to pay the entry fee but just enjoy the views, you can still park at the car park and have a walk around the rim of the outer hill. On a nice Saturday afternoon you can usually enjoy watching aircraft take off from the Old Sarum airfield followed by the skydivers they carried floating down.

Also, if you take the Stonehenge/Old Sarum bus tour from Salisbury, it's worth walking back into the city from Old Sarum. As you leave the car park take a right onto castle road. There's a small lay by about 50 yards down on the right. Behind that you can find a path (Portway) that runs on the north end of the big field to your left through some woods. The path ends onto Stratford road at the base of the hill (sort of a neighborhood). Walk straight ahead a few hundred feet. Where the road turns right, follow the path off to the left. From here on it's paved and will bring you right to the city center. A very nice 30-45 minute walk.
