Spent New Year's Eve there with my wife and elderly father, and we were extremely well looked after. Although we caused a bit of a problem by opting out of the hotel's New Year's party in favour of a quiet meal in the restaurant, we received polite and attentive service both in the restaurant and elsewhere.

The rooms (we booked the premium ones) were spot on: very comfortable bed, a modern bathroom with a proper shower that puts plenty of water on to the user and none on to the bathroom floor, very quiet with a splendid view out over the river, the water meadows and the Cathedral.

The food, as other reviewers have noted, was OK, but not really gourmet. Very decent breakfast, though.

My husband and I have just returned from one night at this hotel. It was very tired looking and the staff not really that helpful and we were not greeted that well.
My Husband had booked the Romantic room, it did have really lovely views and the four poster bed was very grand. However the bathroom didnt seem to match the bedroom and was not that nice at all it really needed a face lift.
Breakfast was the worst breakfast we have ever eaten in a hotel, I don't eat a cooked breakfast so I always have a croissant which was so hard I could of broken a tooth !! so I ordered toast and about 5 slices were brought to me on a plate the size of a saucer. You eat breakfast in the conservatory which was in need of updating horrid yellow and blue table cloths which was dirty, covered in stains.
I am afraid i will not be returning, and would not recomened it.

We decided the go to the Gasmere for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was splendid! We had mentioned that it was a special occasion and the staff referred to it thourghout our visit. The room was amazing with a magnificent and comfortable king sized bed and a stunning view of the cathedral and river.
Dinner was included in the price and they had reserved us the best table in the restaurant. The food was lovely - and the setting fab although we felt a little rushed through.
The staff were very friendly and attentive. The hotel is situated very close to the city so we had a lovely late night stroll though the cathedral after our dinner.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't wait to go back

Although a single traveler, specifically booked a room with a double bed in order to get a good nights sleep in preparation for a golf competition the next day. Arrived to be given cupboard with single bed. Due to sloping ceiling, unable to even stand up in the room. All at reception denied responsibility for the error and were unable to offer an alternative.

Television from the Ark & remote control didn't work.

Could not open or close window blind - it was jammed half open.

Shower had missing knobs and was in urgent need of a descale as virtually no water seemed to come out of it.

Did not risk breakfast and on checking reviews on this site am glad I avoided it.

We went to Stonehenge for the solstice (everyone should experience this once in their life) so had no sleep on the night of the 20th/21st. Drove to the hotel at 12 as Stonehenge closed and were told our room was ready and we could go straight up. Lovely strong shower nearly took skin off. Then straight to sleep for a few hours. Booked bridal suite as it was our anniversary. Wasnt a suite. Was a quite nice room with a nice view. Bed was lovely and large and comfy. Nice four poster. Had booked a candlelit champagne dinner. Were only about 10 diners so we were served quickly.
The hotel owner was there with a private family birthday and his wife was very loud and sounds as though she leads a very boring life, apart from getting her hair done and bragging about her well behaved children who didnt say a word all night. Her husband pretended to fall asleep and snore very loudly but she still carried on. Food was very average. Waiter was friendly though. Had paid for breakfast but we decided we needed more sleep rather than food so stayed in bed. Were a bit late checking out cos we overslept but it was all ok. Would stay again but would probably eat out next time.

Don't be put off by first impressions in the reception area - it is dark and dingy and clearly needs updating. However, the twin bedroom we had was light, clean, spacious and had a superb view across the water meadows towards the Cathedral. Food in the restaurant was OK, but not anything special. However, this is the only hotel I've stayed in for many years that only showed DB&B guests the table d'hote menu and didn't allow them to choose off the a la carte menu and pay a supplement.. The staff were not English, but were all friendly and helpful. Stay here for the convenience, the view and an OK room - not for the dining experience.
