“Easy walking distance to the Cathedral and museums and shops, beautiful river views.”
Reviewed August 20, 2011

The hotel is a older building, so you must forgive some of its shortfalls. But the things you cannot buy, like beautiful river setting, and easy walk to the very busy Cathedral and so many museums it great. We had a discounted room, on the ground floor, with double doors to the garden, and we watched the black sheep and cattle in the fields. Not a house in sight! Where else can you get this in a busy city? Even the stroll to the Cathedral was magic, passing so many medival homes and buildings. I feel the staff do the best they can in difficult conditions (the reception area is so small. We found the bacon and eggs for breakfast were cooked ideally as we like it, I always judge a place by the quality of their bacon! Love to visit again.

Room Tip: Ask for a downstairs facing the river if possible.

Me and my fiancée (now Wife!) chose the Grasmere as our Wedding Venue due to its lovely grounds, location and price. We were also able to have a BBQ menu which is something that we definitely wanted.

We only paid £200 for rooms for the whole day (Ceremony, Wedding Breakfast & Evening Do), Table Plan, Name Cards and all linen for the tables. We saw many Wedding Venues that charged a lot for each of these things but the Grasmere have got it right.

All of our guests also received a discount on the rooms they booked and for the most part the rooms are of a great standard. When booking our wedding we also booked rooms for members of the wedding party and we all received the nicest rooms in the hotel.

The staff were fantastic and always checked if everything was OK with me and my wife during the whole day. Nothing was too much bother and if we ever asked or wanted anything they would sort it out straight away. One of the nicest things was that every time we asked to do something on our wedding day the response was always "yes of course, it's your day".

We were slightly concerned about the food after reading some reviews on Trip Advisor but I have to say that both our BBQ and Evening Buffet were excellent in quality with all of our guests agreed how good it was.

Me and my fiancée even stayed at the Grasmere as a secret shopper experience after we had booked our wedding just to make sure we had it right. We booked a late deal on the room and we stayed in one of the oldest rooms. Yes the room is dated but so unique and still has a great view.

I do think that some of the reviews are a little harsh of the Grasmere because we found everything was great even when they didn't know we were having our wedding there.

If you are planning a Wedding make sure that you check out the Grasmere House Hotel!

Room Tip: If possible get a room in the newest part of the Hotel but the old ones are still nice.

Our room was small and uncomfortable. The rooms have not been updated in many, many years. My guess is the bed (mattress/boxspring) was at least 30 years old; the bedlinens were equally as old. The toilet would not flush until you actually flushed the ancient lever as many as 25 times...this is true, I counted. The inexperienced hotel staff always seem to be in a panic and never addressed our concerns about the perpetual toilet problem. The in-room internet was down all the time and was promised to be fixed 'at any minute'. The only positive I can come up with is that the hotel is in an ideal location--within easy walking distance of Salisbury attractions and restaurants.

This hotel was a last minute booking and was the only one available (via the company booking system).

The hotel looks nice from the outside, gravel drive etc but that's where it ends. I was (am) in room 2 which is on the first floor directly at the top of the stairs. There is a creaking floor board so every time someone walks past, it makes a loud noise. The room is also situated above the restaurant and you can clearly hear people talking, you could not get an early night here!

The bed is rock hard and you can feel all the springs, you have to boil the kettle on the floor if you want a hot drink, the tv is so small I can hardly see it, the bathroom smells musty and the sink is cracked. The bath has a shower above it on a wall attachment but when you turn it on water sprays across the whole bathroom floor. It also has no power to it and doesn't fit on the wall attachment properly (clearly not the one it came with) so you end up having to hold it the entire time.

I could go on but you get the idea. I'm still here writing this review on my phone, do I dare try a cooked breakfast?

I can't wait to leave, never again.

This is the second time we have visited this hotel, and it didnt let us down once again. The hotel is very pleasant, and our twin room overlooked Salisbury Cathedral. The buffet breakfast was excellent again, and the staff very friendly. Would definitely be visiting again in the future. With the free car-parking facilities and walking distance to the city centre, this was perfect for us.

We were happy with our stay here; lovely views across the river and accommodation comfortable. All in all, a decent stay. We picked up a good deal on-line as well.

Good value, great location, helpful staff (who returned my forgotten scarf and gloves in the post to me), a lovely hotel. I can empathise with other travellers who had to carry cases up the narrow staircases, but we just had small bags and it was just fine. Lots of hot water, big, tasteful room, great view out of window (see photo).
