“It's a Best Western not the Hilton”

When booking the hotel I actually went on the past comments on here so I was aware of what had been said.
The hotel is in the centre of town so ideal for all local attractions and easy distance from the transport links. Easy to find (using satnav) however the parking is very tight and i would recommend reserving as there are only 7 spaces available. Parking is £15 a night which can be looked upon expensive however it's gated and monitored so its worth it rather than paying your insurance premuim if anyting happens if parked in local car parks.
Upon arrival the lady (Rebecca) on the desk was extremley polite and excellent customer facing so checking in was quick, easy & hassle free. Payment is made on arrival which I think is good as the checking out was simply drop card key on desk and depart.
The decor was Old English library style which was antique and added to the interest as there was a lot of history on the walls to read up on the local area.
We stayed in the Executive suite which was lovely and offered space to sit down in a lounge and slept in a diiferent part of the room.
The bar was nice and the staff were just as accomodating as the receptionist so all round good staff. The courtyard was nice and give you a quiet environment to have a drink and chat in nice surroundings. The breakfast was self service and well stocked so no downfall there. In all the hotel and staff were good and this made my stay very positive.
I would stay here again and would recommend to others.

Room Tip: No iPod connection so take your own, Pay that little bit more and stay in the Exec Suites and you...

We stayed last night at this hotel as we went to the Playhouse to see a play. We arrived early having motored down from London. We went to the reception desk at 1230 and i asked about checking in. Instead of a nice welcome such as " you are a bit early and the rooms are not ready but would you like to have lunch here " etc etc all i got was a brusque "check in is at 2 pm" hardly a warm welcome so staff training please! she did warm up later and become friendly and helpful. The parking space was tight but i was glad we had booked it though £15 for the night was a bit steep. The rooms were executive rooms and these are excellent though so ask for one with a seperate shower. The room was clean, warm, comfortable large enough for two as there was a large bed and a seperate small but big enough loung for the room. We came back late and the night porter served us in the courtyard as we were smoking cigars. Very very friendly and good service. Breakfast, self service full English but again staff training required as though the staff clear away empty tables they just walked past our table and ignored the used plates that were taking up our room making it difficult to eat the toast after the full Enlgish. . eventually the stack went ! all good food and good tea though kept in a flask. whole cost B and B for two people £103.90 plus £15 for the parking. very good value for the money and would stay here again. Hotel is very central 10 minutes from Ca5thedral which is a must to visit and ten minutes from the Playhouse also a must to visit. both on foot. One shocking aspect is that as you check in they demand payment for the night there and then rather than on checkout. very odd and not hospitable at all especially as they have cred card details on file for the reservation so one is hardly going to do a runner ! I think that best Western should look at this policy as it will eventually lose them business !

Room Tip: read all of above

Good Points

Very clean, friendly staff.

Bad points
Hotel very dated, including carpet on the inside of the lift, parking limited 7 space and charge £15.00 per car per night!!!! breakfast is self service not a problem but the tea and coffee were in vacuum flask and this was cold i had to ask for fresh which was delivered in a pot (why they could not do this in the first place i have no idea), the hotel cooked breakfast you needed 3 hands to get it on to your plate and was not well present and either looked under cooked or over cooked.

I will not be stopping again

I stay at the Best Western Red Lion several times a month and have done for coming up to 4 years now and can truthfully say the hotel has improved immensely. The staff here are second to none I have dined in the restaurant on several occasions but prefer the bar as I eat just a light snack in the evening.
As for the bedrooms, I have stayed in several as you can imagine and have never had a problem or seen anything like what is in the pictures. I cannot comment on the car park as I have always taken the train. I hope to stay here for several more years to come

Having tickets for an event at the Playhouse theatre in Salisbury we decided to treat ourselves to night away from home at short notice. We were very pleased to find that an Executive Room with a four poster bed was available and even happier when we discovered the ' best price' including full breakfast, direct from the hotel was just under £100. We had seen many good reviews and a couple that seemed a bit unfair and factually incorrect. Our experience was definitely at the top end of what we might have hoped for. The room was excellent with loads of authentic character, lots of space including a lounge area. The bathroom had a separate shower in addition to a large bath. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The whole hotel is full of character, both inside and the inner courtyard with a massive Virginia Creeper hanging down. All in all an excellent treat and we will definitely stay again.

Easy to reach by cab from the rail station! Even easier to walk through old town. Grabbed a quick lunch there when we arrived and enjoyed the food -- husband enjoyed a pale ale with his lunch of meats and smoked fish. I tried the ploughman's lunch and was quite happy. After we walked through town, we returned ready for a nightcap and our room. Our room was very nice and staff was fantastic! We enjoyed a nice breakfast the next morning just before we left. We truly enjoyed the courtyard and wish we had better weather to have sat out there at some point!

I stayed at this hotel for one night and have to say the service was friendly and attentive. The room I stayed in was clean and full of olde world character. I ate in the vine restaurant and had an heirloom tomato salad, which was beautifully presented and came with gazpacho. A delicious fillet steak cooked rare as I asked and a lovely chocolate torte to finish. I would fully recommend this hotel and would stay again.
