This Hotel was beautiful, right in the middle of town and about 1/2 mile from the train station.
It was right in the center of everything ! It was a very old wooden building so beware of smoke
alarms that go off in the night.
It has a beautiful little courtyard in the front, lots of rooms, bar and restaurant too. We did not get breakfast included with the room, which would have been a nice plus .
We had a very nice room but the bed was a bit hard and springy. Don't expect internet to
work, as it only works in front of the front desk....
The room was very clean and nice clean white sheets...
All in all this was an great place to stay, and the location could not be beat !

Taking a weekend break in this city is strongly recommended for all visitors to England and indeed for all English people with an interest in history, architecture, music, literature and so on. Getting to the centre of the city by road is notoriously difficult and parking just as bad. Staying in the centre of town makes it all easier so it best to travel by train. There are a few central hotels but one claims to date from the 11th century - the Red Lion, now part of the BestWestern chain so known as the.. well you get it. It's small hotel with the chaotic layout one would expect of such an ancient building. The rooms are not air-conditioned of course but you can open the window. Upon arrival a glimpse of the ancient courtyard is enticing as you walk through the old gates. When you reach the reception area it is immediately apparent that the hotel is stuck in the 1970s. Red carpets everywhere, an old fashioned dining area. It almost had a "Fawlty Towers" feeling. A call to the bar for 2 "kir royales" was met with "we don't have that sir" as if it was in a bottle. Yes, the barman had not actually heard of it. We did laugh about that! Champagne would do nicely thank you. At dinner, the delightful waitress took our orders which arrived promptly. The wine however was "not available" according to the wine waitress. But it wasn't the one we had selected. That wine was available and arrived rapidly. The main course was also incorrect, the wrong steak dish - a case of lost in translation I think. I ate it with pleasure even though the person who had ordered it ruined the steak by asking for it to be well-done. I wonder what he thought of my rare fillet and the parmentier potatoes? Never mind, I thought, and gave a generous tip to the sole waitress who was doing her best. The bedrooms had blankets instead of the more comfortable duvets and the pillows had not seen a feather but were full of foam chunks.. Perhaps another sign of the times. Oh and if you did open the window, don't look at the external paintwork because there isn't any. Its all flaked off. Despite all the reservations, this is a great place to stay in central Salisbury. Not cheap though. We hope the BestWestern invest some money for an urgent makeover. We'll be back like a shot.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main road (obvious really!)

The reason why this is not a sigle-star review is just the great location.
Can't say any other positive thing.
I stayed there for one night only - luckly. I booked via Booking.com, and the ad was about a 49 square meters room, which was wide indeed (with a slight musty smell and a very old, tired mood), but definately not that wide, not more than 25 meters. Nothing wrong with that, but why lying?

The true mess was the receptionist's incredible rudeness (probably she is accustomed to older and richer guests, and knew that two young guys wouldn't probably pay a ridiculous price to have breakfast or dinner there...).
But what was really mean was her cheat: when we asked about a car park near the hotel, she told us that we could have left the car in their park for 15 £ each night. As soon as in the room, the leaflet said that there was a free one just in front of the hotel.
Moreover, when we asked for the wi-fi password, she slapped a piece of paper in our hand and didn't even said a goodbye. We were upset for such a rude behaviour.

I'm a little confused as there appears to be 2 entries for this hotel, this one and another for Vine Restaurant at the Best Western Red Lion Hotel Salisbury. The other entry has 4 reviews, three of which are poor or worse. This is my second visit to the restaurant in the Red Lion Hotel, Salisbury, and I went back because the first visit was so enjoyable. This was a visit with a groupon voucher for a 2 course lunch. This was also the first day with their new menu. My wife had Broccoli and asparagus soup, and I had Ham hock terrine with Brioche toast. This was followed by Chicken breast stuffed with wild mushrooms, and beetroot tarte tatin with goats cheese. All 4 courses were delicious. Having seen the marbled chocolate torte with cappuccino ice cream go by, we ordered that too. All in all, a very satisfying lunch in very pleasant, slightly olde worlde surroundings. Service was also very good.

I stayed at the Red Lion Hotel in June 2013 with a group of 30 people. The staff was an amazing help. They made sure everything went smoothly, from the check-in to the check-out. The receptionist Sian truly made our stay a great experience with her enthusiasm and excellent customer service and I will definately come back!

My wife and stayed here in Aug 2013. The staff were all great and the old coach house look and feel was just as we had expected. We had dinner in the hotel and it was very good and good value.
No air con and we could hear the room next door a little too clearly but this must be expected in a hotel hundreds of years old. The bathroom was new and beautifully fitted.
The location is great, a short walk from the city centre and the cathedral. The only thing I have marked down on was some of the fittings were a little too jaded and the bar was perhaps a bit under stocked and not very welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in a newer part of the hotel, less atmosphere but I suspect a better nights sleep

My Son and I stayed for one Saturday night as we were going to a nearby show early the following morning. The Hotel is very quaint and the staff are very friendly it in a good central location for exploring Salisbury during the day but we stayed in room 80 overlooking a side road and the seriously humid weather that night meant we had the widows open (no Air conditioning) and the noisy revellers and their cars did not stop until 3am. We pre-booked parking which was lucky as there only seems to be three spaces in the hotel unfortunately I also pre-booked a full English at £10 each this was a very disappointing buffet with very bland re-heated food save your money and have breakfast anywhere else.
