“good value and comfortable”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Based in the centre of Salisbury, so very central. Their parking charges are expensive but there is free on and off street parking just outside after 6pm. Like many Best Westerns it is slightly quirky, but then what do you expect when in a very old inn. The furnishing, perhaps you may call it period! However it is very clean and well decorated. some may not like the blankets on the bed but that suited us fine and the bed large. The room was well heated and free wifi. The breakfast was very good and the hot section you ordered individually, something I really appreciate.

A group of us went for afternoon tea to celebrate two birthdays among the group.
The waitresses were very helpful and we ordered 4 afternoon teas between us. It was a good job we did as if we had ordered 8 we would stilll be there eating it. The cake stands were laden with goodies, all made on the premises. The variety was astounding, lovely warm scones with clotted cream, chocolate and cherry cake, chocolate tart, croissants, shortbread and cookies. They offered a wide variety of tea to drink so everybody had the tea of their choice.
If I had to make a criticism it would be that the dinner forks, knives and soup spoons we were given to eat all this with were far too large and dessert forks, knives and spoons would be more dainty for this delicious tea.
Otherwise all I can say is that I will be back for more!!!!

We had requested a car park space ("for which there may be a charge"), but when we got there we found out it was FIVE times the rate the Hilton Hotel had charged us four days earlier! We subsequently discovered two close cheap car parks, so they are worth looking for if you have to stay at this place. The receptionist, Maria, was dismissive to the point of rudeness. She demanded our hire car keys be handed over "in case of a fire". Well, first it's a hire car, and if you're not on the policy as a named driver, (particularly considering the No Responsibility For Guest Cars notice) then you don't get to drive it, and secondly, if there IS a fire, you should be seeing people to safety, not poodling round in their cars. It would take a lot of poodling too, as the car spaces are minute, luggage and passengers have to be out before you park or they don't fit. Of course, if you need to move the cars because they're blocking exits or emergency access, as was suggested to us, then you've put guest parking in the wrong place! The room was tired and worn to the point of ingrained grubby, with claims of being probably the oldest purpose built hotel in England poorly backed up by the peeling 1980s wallpaper and cornice strips. The mattress was visibly uneven under the bedspread, and was hard, similar to a futon in feel. We were on the second floor, facing the main street, and despite doubleglazing street noise and conversations were clearly heard. The shower had poor, intermittent flow, and the towel rail was rusted and coming off the wall. We had booked a half board option, but the menu did not appeal to either of us, and we were told our rate was special, and dinner was free. Perhaps, but we still think we got a better, and tastier, meal from the Indian takeaway! Breakfast next morning was average, though the orange juice tasted like washing up liquid. The waitress got three orders wrong (including ours) while we were there, which is strange as they put our orders straight onto iPad, so there shouldn't be any forgetfulness or difficult to read writing. The sausages had an odd pulped paper texture, which rather matched the taste. However, the bacon was thick and delicious, and the hotel is only mnutes walk from the glorious Salisbury Cathedral. Whether these two points make up for the rest? We certainly don't think so!

Dear Annie

Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel after your stay.

The car park is charged at 15.00 per day and is clearly displayed on all sites and correspondance with each guest. There are cheaper alternatives away from the hotel as suggested by yourself. It is a personnal prefrence where people park and our hotel car park gets booked up quickly with the limited spaces available and the fact that it is behind locked gates and secure.

With regard to the keys for the car, we do like to keep keys in case of an emergency and cars need to be moved during your stay. No cars block any fire doors or exits from the hotel. The disclaimer for the cars says that we are not responsible for luggage left in the cars by yourself but our liable for damage caused if we move your car.

I apologise that you did not have a pleasent stay at the hotel and hope you will try our hotel again soon.

If I can be of further assistance please dont hesitate to contact me directly at the hotel.

My wife and I decided to visit Salisbury to celebrate our wedding anniversary so that we could meet up with friends.
We chose the Red Lion for a two night stay due to the connection with Best Western.
Our superior room was well appointed although the amount of dust left us with the impression that there was insufficient staff to do the basics beyond making the bed. I have photographs to prove it.
Unfortunately we both ate smoked haddock for breakfast after our first night and suffered badly as a result. Having said that we did enjoy our duck meal the evening before to the extent that my wife ordered the same on the second evening. This time iIt was so over cooked most of it was inedible
I also had reason to complain about the plumbing (toilet water ending up on the floor and the public ones being out of action) plus there were Christmas parties the second evening so we were made to wait for a table. Our overtures to the management have been fobbed off.
Would we go back? No. but we would to Salisbury, a charming city.

Room Tip: We were in room 22 on the first floor.

We booked to stay in this hotel the night of our wedding. We went in a month before hand to look at the rooms with four poster beds, and selected one we liked and specifically booked that room.
We turned up about 11.30pm the night of our wedding, after leaving our reception, and were told our room was no longer available and we'd been given another room. The guy on the reception desk couldnt have been less sorry or bothered. I was, understandbly, gutted. He was rude, and unhelpful to say the least. There was I, stood in my wedding dress wanting to go to our room we'd so careful chosen to be told it was not available.
We stayed in the room they had for us because we had no other option but it was hot, small, stuffy, old fashioned (not in a good way) and very noisy as it was near the Cathedral Hotel bar and the Chapel nightclub... All we could hear was the thudding music from both of these places. There was no attempt at an apology either. We refused to pay and went on our way the following morning.
Feel free to make your own mind up about this hotel but I would highly recommend you look elsewhere...

My sister and I spent two nights in this lovely old hotel. It was very warm and inviting. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. The staff were very welcoming and cheerful. The location of this hotel could not be better. Right in the heart of the town, but not too noisy. We would certainly recommend this hotel, and would stay here again.
