“City Centre Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2014

We returned January for another visit to the Playhouse and overnight stay at this conveniently located hotel. A large comfortable room for £71 a night. The staff are simply happy to work there and I suspect that makes life easier and happier for customers. Unless you are disabled there is a charge for carparking but for £5 in the centre of Salisbury the nearest municiple car park will charge you £30 a day. The White Hart as far as I know, is the only hotel in that area that has its own car park. General service is first class. Breakfast is excellent. Wide selection of foods, hot meals cooked to order. One young man dressed to go, not staying for breakfast, filled his bag with apples oranges and bananas and left. We had Eggs Benedict, full English, Salisbury Plain Honey and Marmalade on toast. Blazing fire in the grate at reception, customers sipping coffee and all at 7.30 am on a Wedensday. Yes the hotel is on the cross roads, yes there's traffic from 6am to 10pm. Salisbury is a busy popular place. Oh, and it's walking distance to the Playhouse Theatre. Find a better hotel than this in Salisbury centre by all means and then tell me about it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not overlooking the traffic.

We stayed here over the weekend and I was not impressed. On the plus side, the hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to the local attractions, shops, pubs etc. There is also parking onsite (cost of £5 per day) and the staff were friendly. However all of this is negated by the fact that the hotel is very noisy. You can hear the guests in the adjoining rooms (voices, tv) and the floor creaks so badly that you can hear when anyone near you is walking around. It is a real shame as the hotel has a lovely atmosphere but when you're unable to have a restful night sleep you don't leave thinking about the positives. The noise factor is the reason for my rating and I would not return for this reason alone.

Another positive was the breakfast - hot food is cooked to order and there is a reasonable selection of cold food items.

Room Tip: Try and ask for a room with no occupants in the adjoining rooms.

Dear Jayroe

Thank you for taking the time in letting us know about your recent stay with us at the Mercure Salisbury, White Hart Hotel.

I was pleased to read that the staff were friendly during your visit and I hope added to the lovely atmosphere during your stay, I was also pleased to note that the cooked breakfast which was cooked to order was appreciated. I will share these comments with the team and I am sure this will serve as great motivation for them all.

However I was disappointed that the noise led to your lasting impression rather than the positives above and can only apologise for any inconvenience this caused, once again thank you for letting us know of your experience and I still hope we have the opportunity in welcoming you back in the future.

Kindest Regards

Stayed in this hotel for my birthday. The room was large with a four poster bed, which was so comfortable. Hotel is in a central location to walk into the town. The full English breakfast was cooked to order unfortunately my poached egg was overdone.

Room had a big bath and plenty of complimentary toiletries to use. The staff we dealt with seemed pleasant but not memorable.

Room Tip: Room at the front and to the left was lovely

great city centre location but hotel rooms a bit tired and a bit cold! Room was sparse on extras although the coffee machine was a welcome addition. Staff were friendly and breakfast was good. Free wifi which is always welcome. No gym facilities but plenty of runners around the city to follow. Had a bar meal which was nothing special but decent value all around. £5 car park charge is a bit of a cheek for residents.

What a disappointment. This was advertised as a three course candlelit dinner, with a performance from the local theatre group, and carol singing from the salvation army. Well, first of all there was no candles on the table, just huge bright lights above our heads, it was like sitting in a canteen... salvation army no where to be seen, and the theatre group came in as we were in the middle of our food, so we didn't see what was going on. Then they came around with buckets collecting for charity, which was really awkward in the middle of your meal, trying to dig around in your bag for money. The food was okay, but we could not cut through the potatoes, as they were so overcooked. We went into the bar afterwards hoping it would improve, there was no music at all, it was like a morgue. But when they came in and put all the overhead lights on, it felt like kicking out time, although it was only 9 pm. We could not get out fast enough. What a waste of £35 per head. Also sent two emails to the hotel, but have not had a reply or acknowledgement of the complaint.

This hotel is very near the cathedral close, the shops and some nice pubs (one of which we ate in). The front part of the hotel is very nice looking. At the rear they have tacked on an extension which is where our rooms were. The rooms were OK but the lighting was poor so that the rooms were a bit dark (and the TV did not work properly in one room). Breakfast was quite good: a hot and cold buffet though you could also order some dishes such as kippers. The hotel seemed a bit too expensive for what it offers. They also charged for the use of their car park. We had a beer in the hotel bar: friendly barman and local ale which was nice.
