Amazing building! The staff of the cathedral was very helpful and polite. It was interesting to see the copy of the Magna Carta.

“Great volunteer tour guides!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

I've had variable experience with guided tours, but we drew "Eleanor" as our guide, and she was delightful! Her enthusiasm for the history and architecture of Salisbury Cathedral was genuine and contagious. She really made the place come alive.

Unlike most other medieval cathedrals, Salisbury Cathedral was completed in a matter of decades, and thus shows none of the asymmetry and evolving architecture of almost any other cathedral.

Eleanor's tour ended (as they all do) at the entrance into the adjacent cloister. We spent some time on one side of the cloister, then entered the Chapter House to enjoy it's beautiful architecture and view their copy of the Magna Carta. The latter is a most-not-miss!

Just FYI, it's July 2013 and there is repair work going on both in the cloister (north wall), and on the northeast exterior of the cathedral proper - the side closest to our Sarum College lodgings :-( . But the rest of the cathedral exterior is picture-perfect. And the interior is currently untouched by workmen.

Well worth a visit - great history and beautiful surrounding area. Love the fountain in the middle (See pics) and some interesting tombs - Ted Heath - Who knew Britain's only 'Pink' Prime Ministor was here?

“Medieval Town and Churches”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

If you have time, a short walk to St Thomas' Church is well worth while. Built in 1220 as a place of worship for the Masons working on the Cathedral it has a notable Mural above the Chancel Arch.
The Last Judgment or Doom painting is a powerful feature painted in 1475.

“More like a three ringed circus”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

The cathedral and its staff/volunteers were fantastic - its well worth a visit, but never in July. The problem was a total lack of respect by the 100's of visitors, in particular school groups who were out of control, shouting to each other and barging past people. To make matters worse, one adult so stupid enough to think the font was a wishing well, and throw money in it. (I'm not what you would call a super-religious person, but I was disgusted at the behaviour of the visitors to this magnificent building.)

Thanks for letting us know and we’re sorry that you didn’t find the peace and opportunity for reflection at Salisbury Cathedral that both you and we would hope for. I think you were here during our week of special Leavers’ Services for schools in the Diocese. It’s important to us, and to the schools, that young people have the opportunity to celebrate their time at school in the Mother Church of the Diocese. However at such an event and in such numbers the children do get very excited. We try to manage these situations so that all are able to benefit from their time in the Cathedral and we will keep working to combine our role as a living church with the best possible experience for visitors. We are already thinking about how we work with schools to look after them even better at their school leavers events next year.
