“Superb Staff, Excellent Location, Charming Facilities!”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

This was our second stay at the Cathedral (our first was 3 years ago) and the experience was even better than we remembered.
When we arrived the Bar Keeper rushed out and helped us with our luggage and the friendly girl at reception quickly checked us in. The rooms are smaller, in keeping with the historic building, but clean, well appointed and maintained.
Our first evening we ate a liight dinner in the Pub and were well taken care of by the manager, Steve, who quickly became a friend. The next day at breakfast (which was included in the price) we enjoyed a well prepared quality meal served by a very pleasant and helpful woman (who we later found out was married to our new friend Steve). We eventually ended up staying 5 nights and there were so many times the staff of the Cathedral went above and beyond the call of duty. Everyone at the hotel was friendly and accomodating with real personalities -they (obviously) genuinely cared about the hotel and it's guests.

Room Tip: Apparently the weekends can be very loud because the Pub is very popular with the locals and the Bar...

We make it a point to avoid chain hotels if we at all can, which means we're willing to put up with a certain amount of "quirkiness" in our accommodations. I'd much rather have a small and irregularly shaped room in a unique, friendly setting than a spacious, homogenized room that would be the same -- corporate, efficient and soulless -- anywhere else in the world. If that's your traveling style, I assure you that The Cathedral Hotel is your kind of place. The staff is chatty and engaged, making dinner and sightseeing recommendations without hesitation. The rooms have been updated, but the comfortable beds take up most of the room. It's a place to explore FROM, not luxuriate IN. The public spaces of the hotel are open, however, and my daughter and I were happy to sit by a warm, cheery fire after returning from a damp, chilly day of touring with a glass of wine from the busy bar.

The reason I didn't give the hotel 5 stars is that some of the "finishing touches" that take a small boutique hotel to the next level are still missing. Our two-room suite was a nice find for parents traveling with an older child. However, the shower door had been pulled from its hinges when we arrived, making for a dangerous shower experience. That's the sort of thing housekeeping should have attended to before we got there. Many of the light-bulbs in our room were out, leaving us without overhead lighting in one room of the two -- again, the housekeepers should check for that sort of thing. I have no doubt that if we had a longer stay the issues would have been addressed, but as it was Salisbury was a one-night stop for us, so all we could do was report the issues at checkout -- the woman at the registration desk was concerned and apologetic, and took down the list carefully, however, so that's a good sign.

All in all, a warm and friendly place -- and Salisbury is definitely worth a couple of days if you want to see England beyond London!

Room Tip: The family suite is great, and being on a high floor eliminates the noise from the very popular bar...

By son recently stayed here and it was his first trip away from home. The staff were absolutely first class in ensuring he was comfortable and well fed. They were so friendly and helpful - thank you.
The location is great for seeing the best of Salisbury and close to public transport links too.

We chose this hotel for its location in the centre of the city and its proximity to Salisbury Cathedral, which we have long wished to visit.

We found the hotel easily and there is a car park maybe 50 yards away, where we paid (at 2130hrs) for three hours (£4.20) - which therefore started at 0800 the next morning and took us (or rather our car) through to 1100, which was just right.

The Cathedral is quite close and definitely worth a visit.

The Hotel and its rooms are in a good state of repair and everything works: Heating, lights, TV (albeit no BBC, so we settled for Al-Jazeera - are we really in Wiltshire?). Our stay was quiet, as we were not visiting at the weekend, although we clearly heard the alarm in the room next door at about 0700. The bed was comfortable.

Breakfast was a trifle disappointing. The scrambled egg seemed a little old and my grilled sausage (I had the full english breakfast) had probably been cooked on the day before, so it was not an epic breakfast. If I stayed here again, I would probably forgo the hotel breakfast, even though it is included in the price, and eat in one of the local restaurants that provide breakfast.

Dear Peter3101

Thank you for your generally good review. I am sorry you did not enjoy your breakfast. I do not know why your scrambled egg looked like it was not fresh. All our breakfast and eggs are cooked to order. Once again, thank you and I do hope when you stay again you will give our breakfast a second chance.

Kind Regards

Our family of four stayed here for one night. We ate dinner in the hotel and had a nice meal. We were delighted that they could accommodate our gluten-free requirements both at dinner and for breakfast the next morning. Everyone was really friendly and the rooms were quite comfortable. The bathroom did smell a bit moldy, though everything seemed really clean. It's an old hotel with lots of character, very centrally located, and has a great atmosphere.

Thank you for staying at our hotel during your visit to Salisbury. I am delighted we were able to help in your enjoyment of Salisbury. We have done a lot of work in recent months on our food offering and a key part of this is our special dietry needs menu. I know you were travelling around the U.K. and hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

Uninterested receptionist, mouldy bathrooms and uncomfortable beds. We booked this place last minute. To be fair the location is good (centre of town and not too far from multi storey car park) but overall it was distinctly average - so ok if you need a place to stay for one night but would not recommend for a longer restful stay in Salisbury as the noise was pretty bad too.

Dear Reviewer_29UK

I am sorry you did not enjoy your visit to our hotel. We take customer feedback very seriously and I am upset that you found our customer service less than average. As you will see by other reviewers, one thing visitors always comment on is how helpful our team are, so I am upset you did not receive the same level of customer care. We have an ongoing decoration and maintanance programme to keep on top of the room standards. Thank you for your feedback and I hope you enjoyed your overall visit to Salisbury.

Myself and four friends stayed at the Cathedral Hotel for two nights for a girlie weekend away at the end of May and I haven’t got one bad thing to say about the place!

It’s the kind of hotel you feel welcome from the moment you walk through the door, the staff are more than accommodating and nothing is too much effort.

We ate in the restaurant both evenings, the food is of a high standard with plenty to choose from on the menu, I’m just disappointed I enjoyed my main so much I was too full to try the nickabockaglory . . maybe next time!! Breakfast was tasty and the hot dishes that are made to order arrived super quick, much better than these hotels that leave the cooked breakfast sat out all morning to go cold.

Our rooms were plain but very clean and tidy, more than adequate for us, a powerful shower, plenty of towels, tea, coffee, kettle and a hair dryer, all the essentials a girl could want!

The location is great, two mins walk to the shops, and a two min drive to train station.

This hotel has all you really need in one location, great breakfast, a lovely quiet garden during the day where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a tasty lunch in the sun, a top class evening meal, followed by drinks in the bar, and a night club area in the evening, all this followed by a comfy bed to rest your tired feet! And although the rooms are above the bar, we didn’t hear too much noise once we had gone to bed.

Thanks to everyone at The Cathedral for making our weekend break so enjoyable, and special thanks to Tony, Steve and John for their exceptional hospitality! We’ll definitely be back, and would recommend to anyone staying in Salisbury.
