We make it a point to avoid chain hotels if we at all can, which means we're willing to put up with a certain amount of "quirkiness" in our accommodations. I'd much rather have a small and irregularly shaped room in a unique, friendly setting than a spacious, homogenized room that would be the same -- corporate, efficient and soulless -- anywhere else in the world. If that's your traveling style, I assure you that The Cathedral Hotel is your kind of place. The staff is chatty and engaged, making dinner and sightseeing recommendations without hesitation. The rooms have been updated, but the comfortable beds take up most of the room. It's a place to explore FROM, not luxuriate IN. The public spaces of the hotel are open, however, and my daughter and I were happy to sit by a warm, cheery fire after returning from a damp, chilly day of touring with a glass of wine from the busy bar.
The reason I didn't give the hotel 5 stars is that some of the "finishing touches" that take a small boutique hotel to the next level are still missing. Our two-room suite was a nice find for parents traveling with an older child. However, the shower door had been pulled from its hinges when we arrived, making for a dangerous shower experience. That's the sort of thing housekeeping should have attended to before we got there. Many of the light-bulbs in our room were out, leaving us without overhead lighting in one room of the two -- again, the housekeepers should check for that sort of thing. I have no doubt that if we had a longer stay the issues would have been addressed, but as it was Salisbury was a one-night stop for us, so all we could do was report the issues at checkout -- the woman at the registration desk was concerned and apologetic, and took down the list carefully, however, so that's a good sign.
All in all, a warm and friendly place -- and Salisbury is definitely worth a couple of days if you want to see England beyond London!
