“Wonderful mid week lunch”
Reviewed March 28, 2014

At very reasonable prices for this quality of food. Two of us had three courses, including wonderful fillet and three glasses of wine, £70. A real treat for us, tho' I am sure lots of people spend this sort of money regularly.
Freak ambience and service too. Definitely on favourites list for specials,

“A REAL GEM”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

Thought that I had tried all the best restaurants in and around the New Forest - but have now discovered a real gem. As a previous contributor said "a hidden gem".
The setting, someway off the main roads through the Forest is almost idyllic, typically rural English. The food is top notch rural French.
Had a welcoming and professional reception, immendiately shown to our table in this small, simple and charming restaurant. The service was friendly and the quality and presentation of the food was exceptional - and good value for money.
Have lived on the edge of the Forest for 18 years - but how have I missed this wonderful and delightful gem?
Will certainly be back.

“Great Value, Rustic French Dishes with Generous Portion Sizes”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

My wife and I traveled an hour and fifteen minutes to visit this restaurant. We were meeting friends who had tried it before and enjoyed the experience having been recommended it in turn by other friends.

Both the set (£21.50 for three courses) and the a la Carte are extensive and hopefully cover all the bases. I say this in that the core strength of this restaurant is in classic rustic French dishes that may be a tad rich, earthy or hearty for some more delicate stomachs. Having said this I simply loved it! Even the service is beautifully gallic. On my visit, the owner/manager struck up a conversation about Pierre Koffmann (the former Michelin three star chef of La Tante Claire and original chef at The Waterside Inn). Going back to the description of earthy, hearty, gutsy food I started with Pig's trotter and cheek in a truffle sauce (from the set menu!!) which was just perfect. The following Sea Bass in Champagne Sauce had perhaps suffered a tad from overcooking but this was still ambitious, clever and generally well judged bistro food.

A generous helping of cheeses followed - a proper cheese board that you might see in top end Michelin dining rooms, in this case for a £3 supplement!! (The exclamation marks are to emphasize great value).

Desserts followed in a similarly generous style, with something to suit all tastes and pockets.

No wonder the place was full with a gentle buzz. I would suggest booking is essential and a nice window table in the front left portion of the restaurant. I didn't see the wine list but my suspicions are that it would be reasonably pitched. This isn't a Lyon bouchon nor gascon bistrot but a welcome addition of a little piece of France to Nomansland, New Forest, Hampshire. (Really it is a place!!).

Good luck, happy eating!!

“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Took my parents and family for 80th birthday celebration. The food was excellent and the staff very professional yet friendly. Owner a bit standoffish. Would of been nice if they had made some sort of fuss as it was my Mums 80th. A happy Birthday wouldn't of gone a miss. Professional is nice but there are times when you need to be personable.
