Go and see this village with its own stone circle yes its not far from stonehenge.
Some good walks around and some shops and a pub in the village. But this is not like stonehenge you can touch and stand by the stones and its ALL FREE. £4 to park your car. Stonehenge will cost you £20 per adult. Avebury stones worth a visit.

Visited on a cold Sunday quite soft underfoot you do need decent footwear. £4 to park all day but don’t need to spend anymore. You can get right up to the stones/ walk the circle etc. some rope barriers to prevent entry to the barrow but that was trying to prevent erosion. Thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors in history

You can visit this site for free as it basically is part of the village of Avebury. It is imporessive how the village has been built around it. It has quite a large diamter as well (larger than Stonehenge) and is made up of standing stones.

We visited here enroute to Stonehenge and I expected it to be disappointing in comparison but it was not. Although it too is a stone circle there were other attractions here. The only down point for me was the road through the middle but this can't be changed. A lot of people mention car parking fees, these were fairly high but are free if national trust members. The trust site further into the village was good too. Lots of info and a lovely book shop at the bottom of the site. We also visited West Kennet Long Barrow which is a couple of miles outside of Avebury.

It is big, old, fascinating structure. Not as well known as notoriuos Stonhange but do visit both and decide wich one impress you more. For me Avebury is the winner. Why? Spirits of the past are present here?
Nooooo, it is just 0% not commercialised, you walk alone on meadows, tuching the stones and if you unleaseh your imagination revive the far past.
