Owner description: This mysterious stone circle is thought to have been constructed in Neolithic times between 2500 to 2000 BC by The Beaker people, who might have played a major role in the formation of another eerie ancient site at Stonehenge.

Althougn Stonehenge has a certain air about it, I though the Avebury Stone Circle a much better experience simpky in terms of being able to walk amongst the rocks, to touch them and the quantity of stones intotal. Friends went late in the afternoon and said it was quieter and cooler, whereas I went in the morning to avoid the heat. A few people were there but not crowds. And best of all, it was free!

It was hot and sunny the day we were here and I would imagine this is the best way to see the site. Plenty of people here but the site is so huge that they don't spoil the effect of this very impressive stone circle. It can take a while to walk around and appreciate everything and try to visualise how it once looked. Sadly there are huge gaps in the various circles and I read in the guide book that 15 stones remain buried - how lovely it would be if these were re-erected. To make the day even more interesting it's worth the walk over to West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill which are both worth seeing. The sites are free but the car park has a charge.

No wonder it's been drawing visitors for Millennia! An absolute must do for any visitors to the area. Stonehenge on steroids! The site is huge (far bigger than the boundaries suggest) and the museum is a great way to get all the info you need on the site. I stayed in Avebury, so also managed to explore at dusk and dawn. Magical in the early morning mist!

No expectations in advance, but I was positively surprised. A huge stone circle, with modern roads and buildings inbetween. A nice place for just wandering around, taking photos and philosophing for 1,5 to 2 hrs.

You need some time to walk around, and in rain I imagine it can be a challenge. There was also quite a lot of people, and the carpark was very crowded.
