“Good service, great atmosphere, decent food”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Located in The Light shopping centre this restaurant offers good food and service. The snack menu (like tapas) is really good value with large portions (don't over order).

Ate here with Friends. One had found a table so we stayed. On a Saturday evening, it's more like a noisy pub, but we needed an early meal before a Concert (5pm) It got so much worse when the piano started, I had to drop out of any conversation - I simply couldn't hear. The food was Ok, nothing special - small portions yet full price. All in all the noise transcended everything and we didn't enjoy our time together in the restaurant because of it. The shining star was our waitress who couldn't do enough for us and maintained a cheery visage throughout and brought our food as quickly as she could. Last time I came at lunch time and really enjoyed it. I don't think I'll be going again.

“Consistently good for seven years”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

Visited this evening on my own. Smoked venison starter was very tasty, mushroom papardelle equally enjoyable. Two cocktails and an espresso, and the bill came to £28. Happy to leave a tip.

Pleased to see many of the same staff year in year out at this venue - I have been eating here since 2006, and this includes a number of family get togethers now no longer possible. The continuity in this regard can make these times seem not so long ago.

The venue calls itself "Browns bar and brasserie" - which is why much of the criticism directed towards it in these reviews is in my view rather petty. The food here is pubbish - none the worse for that - and that is quite what one would expect of a Brasserie. If you want a fully comprehensive restaurant, then feel free to go find one, and pay the associated hike in prices.

To be fair, the prices at Browns are a little steep, and do mean that they need to work hard to justify them, but the bar is the best in Leeds, the service usually the best in Leeds, and the decor is absolutely outstanding, the nicest I have personal experience of anywhere. The prices reflect the quality of experience.

A previous visit when they couldn't serve lobster tagliatelle early on the lobster special evening - laughably due to a supposed shortage of said crustacean - is the only point which stopped Browns getting an excellent rating. Considering we were invited to change our order to Thermidor, we could not make sense of this! But there may be more to this than an outsider would know.

“Good atmosphere friendly staff - food ok but not quite in same league as the Browns in Newcastle”
Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

I often worry when you can get a table for 5 at short notice on a Sat night but based on some good evenings at the one in Newcastle we booked up.
1st impressions - great conversion impressive building, lively atmosphere. Shown to nice round table but had to ask for some menus. Starters ok but nothing dazzling portions small goats cheese was tiny. Crab stack very tasty. Mains - lamb shoulder, sirloin steak, wild boar burger, chicken pie. Portions ok and tasty but burger plain compared to one I have had in Newcastle. Pie was poor and had 2 chicken bones in it. We have had the fish pie before and even though pies are at cheaper end of the menu wouldn't recommend them. Browns need to revisit their pies ! Sticky toffee nice but needed more sauce. Eton mess ok but lot of meringue. Service slow but it was a Saturday. Nice friendly waiter . Overall we had a good evening but some areas of the food / presentation could be improved.

Had lunch today at Brown's, smoked salmon sandwich on granary bread was disgusting, the bread was extremely dry and even had it been ok did not warrant the £8.99 price tag! The only thing that saved the day was the waiter who was very pleasant.
