Owner description: Tropical World at Roundhay Park is one of the most well-loved family attractions in Leeds and only three miles from the city centre. At Tropical World you can take a trek through the rainforest; stopping off briefly in the outback of Australia before a quick excursion through the desert, and all in the same morning! It is home to some old friends that include rare birds, crocodiles, butterflies, bats, spiders, snakes and the meerkats - the cutest family in Leeds. It re-opened in March 2015. This follows some stunning renovations that include the aquarium area transformed into a new Amazon themed zone where you can see new residents including piranhas and salamanders.

We visit every couple of months and always enjoy it. There always seem to be something new every time.

The aquatic sections definitely need a little more tlc as they are looking a bit un loved and dirty.

Nice surroundings with a park and a pub close by also free parking down the road and close to public transport links.

Great for kids and adults alike, very hot, to be expected.

Look forward to our next visit.

Great wet afternoon activity, cheap and interesting! Good way to occupy kids for an hour or two. Surrounding gardens are lovely in the summer too.

We visited in January, the weekend before they advertised the shut down for renovations which look long overdue. I last came here 20 years ago and left impressed. Maybe age has made me more aware but the sight of massive snakes alive in what should be display tanks for a stuffed animals was appalling. The glass was cracked on one, as to be expected as the smaller kids continually banged on them. The snakes could never expect to stretch out to be full length as there wasn't the length in the tank in any direction. So sad to think that's its life now.
Maybe we were spoiled with a visit to the birds of Eden in south Africa where the birds and other 'saved' animals could live in a tented free space with enough room to fly for at least a few mins rather than the small 15 second flight they have here.
All the cages/tanks seemed too small. The' greenery' in some of the tanks was plastic which implies its ' a show ' and the council cannot be bothered to get something that appeals to the creature to make its life better /interesting. Even a hamster gets a wheel in its cage! I can understand the need for animal education but surely there is a need to show some humanity. I'd hate to think kids went home thinking its ok to keep a pet like this.
The reason I gave any score was the butterfly area is lovely but does need everyone to go the same direction especially when prams are involved.
The toilets were equally unloved and in need of attention!

We came here to entertain my girlfriend's younger brother and for the price, we weren't expecting that much. On the contrary it was excellent with loads of interesting creatures to see and was well worth it and for about a fiver each, you won't have a better value day out. Roundhay Park next door so a great place to come in summer.
