“Tasty reasonably priced meal for two, great new place to eat!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

Visited early Feb 2014 for an evening early valentines meal for two.

Good welcome upon arrival and good attentive service throughout. Only minor criticism was that the place was quite cold (temperature wise) initially. It warmed up once more customers arrived and to be fair we did dine pretty early.

We ordered a selection of dishes and we couldn't fault the food. Starters were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the black pudding terrine.

Unsure about previous reviews commenting on portion sizes as we found these to be just right, particularly for the main courses. We had three side dishes (veg, kale and chunky chips) between two and found this to be more than enough. The mackrel main was superb. The passion fruit creme brulee was tasty for dessert and again portion size was ample.

Wine and beer was reasonably priced. Try their awesome homebrew rye ales!

Total price was approx £30 per head for three courses which we couldn't fault.

We enjoyed our visit and had a feeling that seeing as this is a reasonably new place it can only improve on an already good start and we like their attempts to serve quite innovative food compared to what is available locally.

“Hungry for more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2014

My partner and I have become regular visitors to the Hungry Bear and we love it.

Each time we go the food is delicious and perfectly portioned (so often difficult to get to a 3rd course as the portions are hearty) and the crafted ales are delicious.

It has taken me a while to review as I felt it needed time to settle down. Early on there were a few service issues (always well meaning mistakes rather than rudeness) but now the waiting staff are excellent.

The belly pork is my favourite dish. It has come in several incarnations, but boy do they know how to cook it.

Outstrips Zucco for taste and style by a mile, same with East and we tend to visit more often even than Via Verde.

Well done the Hungry Bear. Fantastic addition to meanwood and long may it last!!

“Reliably great food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

I've been to the hungry bear three times now since it opened, both with family and friends. Really nice atmosphere and great food everytime. Agree with below that service is spot on, prompt but unobstrusive. Staff very helpful when making choices and never made us feel rushed.

“Will need to change to survive...v disappointed.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014 via mobile

Issues; price, quality and quantity. The price is very inflated for both quality and amount of the food served. The 'blade of beef' was £18 at
Hungry Bear, this is a slow cooked cheaper piece of meat and as a result the portions should have been more generous. Also, this was nothing that we don't cook at home; it should really have been more special. The fish we ordered was again a cheaper fish, grey mullet. It was really tasty but again the portions verged on mean. Depending on what you order you need to have a snack before you go. We really wish this restaurant well and hope it survives but they will need to sit down, get a plan and get real to ensure they have longevity. The burger one of our party ordered was just right for her and at £8 ish this is perhaps where their strength lies. The great asset to HB is their lovely, efficient and unobtrusive staff.
