“More froth than substance.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

Went here on saturday having managed to dodge it on previous nights out in Leeds. In a nutshell it's a massively overpriced bit of fun. We booked a table for 5.30 so avoided the ignominy of queuing to get in (why would you do that?). The food tables are at the back , the vast majority of floor space is for bar users and there are only maybe 15 or so eating tables so booking is essential to avoid a very long wait. We started with nachos with various toppings and houmous and pitta bread, (my veggie wife wanted the beet root relish and halloumi parcels but we were advised they had run out of halloumi, really at 5.30 on a bank holiday Saturday!) For main we had DIY fajitas and a burger, so rare a good vet may have been able to bring it back to life. All in all bang average. Leeds is not short of decent bars and eating places and apart from the novelty value of cocktails fizzing away in chemistry flasks not sure what the alchemist adds.

“What a fantastic place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

Arrived on a busy Saturday and was told how many tables in front of us, decided to wait, so got a drink from the bar, perched ourselves on chairs and waited, but not for long. The staff were attentive, organised and helpful. The food was lovely, had a very enjoyable experience. Would definitely go again.

“Great spot!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

We visited The Alchemist last weekend for brunch and had an amazing time. Leeds has always struggled for great places for breakfast and The Alchemist certainly fills that void. We managed to grab a table on the terrace in the sun and I ordered the full English and my friend ordered Eggs Florentine, both were really tasty and my friend has not stopped raving about the hollandaise sauce.

We then decided to move on to a few cocktails, there are so many to choose from but we decided on the Grapefruit Martini and the Smokey Paloma.

It really is the ideal location to spend a lazy bank holiday weekend, great for people watching and soaking up the sun.

Would highly recommend the breakfast and the service was good, really worth a visit.

“What a night!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2014

I had a night out in Leeds with two old school friends and we really fancied a good old girlie catch up and some great cocktails. The Alchemist did not disappoint.

On the recommendation of my friend, my first choice of cocktail was the "Big Al Porn Star" which unfortunately was not on the new menu which was changed this week. Our bartender Jamie however did not hesitate to make it for me anyway. He was engaging and chatty, talked us through the making of the cocktail and even wrote the recipe down for us.

We were then taken to our booked table and through the evening, managed to work our way through an impressive amount of the cocktail menu!. Our waiter was Billy, who couldn't do enough for us. When I was undecided about what to try next Billy pulled up a chair and discussed the menu making recommendations based on my preferred tastes.

The food was very reasonably priced and the menu was varied and interesting. Choices range from old classics to modern cuisine. We all chose the retro classics of chicken in a basket, fish finger sandwich and, for me, a cheese burger. The burger was pink as I requested (although there is an option for well done if you prefer) and was perfectly cooked for me.

The décor and ambience were pleasing and we were made to feel so comfortable we stayed throughout the evening.

I don't live near Leeds anymore, having moved away 20 years ago but I will definitely seek out The Alchemist again when I go back to visit. I'd also like to say a personal thank you to Jamie and Billy for helping to make our evening so enjoyable.

“good for young people”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

Looked like a good place to dine, with a view over Leeds. I did ask for a table view, but the person booking us in, said she would try as they had a lot of bookings. When we arrived that evening, it was indeed very busy. We had to push are way through, the bar area to the restaurant. We never got a table view, but was given a cosy little area, that pleased us. The service was quick, but because they was so busy, everything felt a bit rushed. Our food was tasty, but wish there had been more vegetarian meals on the menu. We could not really have any conversation, with the noise of the other diners, and the music being played. Summing up. I would recommend this restaurant to all the young people. That like the hustle & bustle while eating. For myself & my husband, we will not be returning.
